I had been awake for ten minutes. I knew where I was, I knew what had happened. This situation was nothing new to me. I kept my eyes slightly cracked open so I could stare at Stone, who was sitting hunched over on a chair, his shaking hands grasping tightly onto mine.

I couldn't bear to wake up. To face the man I once loved solely and see the shock in his eyes. To see him cringe and fall back as he truly realized his Ella was gone. That the girl he had known in Santa Monica was still back in Santa Monica, and that this Ella in Brooklyn was no one he would have ever loved.

I was no longer Ella Miller. I was a mess. An addict, a liar, a fake, a broken heart, a dirty, crime-covered creature in a pretty dress. I was no longer Puck. I was no longer a tip-toeing fairy who found her prince in the busy streets of a city. I was a ruined woman with a mind for one man and a heart for another. I was not who he had fallen for. And I was terrified to see that realization in his soulful eyes.

So I stayed silent, feigning sleep for minutes more, keeping my breaths shallow and my eyes shut as I listened to the heavy breathing and occasional sniffle coming from the man beside me.

Time passed like a tragedy- slow and painful, and only when I heard Stone shuffle and stand, exiting the room, did I open my eyes to take in my surroundings.

The hospital room I was in seemed private- a far more luxurious emergency room than I had ever been in. Both my arms had IVs and my shirt was off, those ECG things covering my chest area- with only the thin hospital gown giving my body privacy. My shoes had been removed and placed neatly near my bed, and my makeup was taken off as well, my skin feeling strangely clean.

As the events from before had begun to sink in, my hands began to tremble, and I held them together closely as I breathed in and out. In and out.

Fuck.

I tried not to make noise as my mind started panicking, biting my lip and shutting my eyes tight in an attempt to block out any sorrow.

My body shook and tears slipped from behind my shut eyes. I could not hold it in as much as I had wanted to.

Five things. Five things. I had to think of five things before Stone saw me like this. Before he saw a confirmation of my insanity. Before he truly saw the mess I had become.

Five things. Five things I could see. I opened my eyes, wildly blinking away the tears that had formed. White hospital blanket. Blue hospital gown... White hospital door... I wiped my eyes furiously. Black hospital machine... White folding chair.

I breathed in deeply, nearly choking on air, and then shut my eyes closed once more. Hear. Five things I could hear. What were five things I could hear... Beeping monitor.... Beating heart... Heavy breathing... Rustling blankets... Door opening...

My tear-filled eyes flew open and I jumped as Stone walked through the door, freezing when he saw I was awake.

"Ella..." He breathed, and then rushed towards me, dropping the bag he held in his hands. He nearly crushed me as he jumped into the bed, wrapping his arms around me and squeezing as if he were afraid to let go. "Ella, Ella, Ella..."

"Stone," I croaked, breathing harshly as his familiar scent flooded my senses.

"Ella," he whispered once more, pulling back to stare at me with wide eyes. The whites around his pupils were painted a furious red and tiny drops of dew hung off his lower lashes.
