Adalind woke up to knocking at the door getting pulled from her nightmare. She had dreamt of the day the abuse had started. She hated that it was forever engraved in her. She sat up wiping her eyes. She reached out turning on her lamp. "Come in."
Lukas stuck his head in his mom, had sent him up to make sure she was and get her to come downstairs. "Happy birthday my mom wants you downstairs."
"Thanks! Coming just give me a minute." She got up and went to brush her teeth and hair figuring she wasn't coming back up.
She quickly put on sleep pants and a hoodie putting her phone in her back pocket before heading downstairs. She saw everyone leaning against the kitchen island.
Aviana noticed her first she knew this was her first birthday with them and she wanted to make it special for her. "Happy Birthday Adalind!"
"Thanks, I guess." She wasn't the biggest fan of her birthday and while her best friends had always tried to make it the best experience possible for her. It wasn't always easy. "Are y'all always up this early?"
"Normally yes." It was a force of habit getting up when the sun was out.
"Good to know." She knew she was going to have to get used to their early rising and maybe she would.
"So we have a few things for you since you're new to New York and since Justin had made it clear that he doesn't understand how he has more clothes than you when you are a girl." She wanted to spend time with her stepdaughter and Justin had made a fair point she didn't have a lot of stuff and she was hoping to change that. "I'm going to take you to the mall. In a special way."
She was confused by the statement what was so special about the mall. "What does that mean?"
"I'll explain later."
"Whatever you say?"
"Do you want food I notice you barely eat?"
"Not hungry i'm skinny remember and I kind of want to stay that way." She cared about her weight she hated that she did but she did. It was something her mother had engrained in her before she had died and she had never broken that Habit. Her phone vibrated in her pocket she took it out seeing that it was Vivian. She rolled her eyes feeling all their eyes on her. "It's Vivian"
She answered the call putting it on speaker."Happy Birthday."
"Happy Birthday Adalind."
"It's like 4 am Amanda what are you doing up." Although she was happy to hear from her best friend she knew it was really early in the morning.
"I was already up my mother insisted that we spend New Year's up." She really missed the two she would not find at all staying up to talk to her only two friends. Who just happened to be related but she had already thought they were. "Then Vivian called me and gave me the news. I told you two that you looked alike and you didn't believe me."
"Well, now we do Amanda." Vivian groaned she felt stupid she wished that she would have put it together earlier. "I should have put it together years ago that is my mother's Maiden name."
Amanda was happy they had each other but she really wished she was with them. "Hope you have fun and remember what I said Dales la oportunidad de que te sorprendan"
(Give them a chance they might surprise you)
"Bye Amanda get some sleep and stay out of trouble." Adalind knew how Amanda could be sometimes and she was worried for her being alone in Cali.
"Night have fun enjoy your day. no eres feliz a menudo te amas Adalind"
(you aren't happy often love you Adalind)
