Jisung took off as soon as the car was parked. The boy shrieked with laughter as he barrelled towards the golden sand and shimmering waves, Jungwoo trailing after him in a poor attempt to catch the boy.
"What about sunscreen? Get back here! Sungie!" Jungwoo hollered. Other families enjoying their day at the beach turned to watch the scene with amusement on their faces.
Meanwhile, you unpacked the things from the car, carrying as much under your arms as possible and unable to retain your smile at the sight of your husband failing to round up your hyperactive child. The terrible twos could certainly be terrible. But you loved them both with all of your heart and couldn't ask for a better family, even if they were insufferable at times.
You slipped your sandals off and sunk your feet into the sand. It was warm, no doubt from the sun beating its heat down all morning, and the wind whipped past your cheeks as you made your way to where Jungwoo was now attacking Jisung with tickles as a punishment for running off.
"S-stop! Daddy no!" Jisung wheezed out between his gasps of laughter. His hair was already covered in grains of sand and his legs were damp up to his knees, making even more sand cling to his skin.
"You rascal." You tutted at him with no real discipline. "Bring him here, Woo, baby."
Jungwoo followed your order by slinging the boy over his shoulder, putting up with his thrashing legs, and lowering him into your lap to allow you to smear sunscreen over every patch of visible skin. Jisung pouted, but put up with it nonetheless. You weren't satisfied until his skin was glowing from the sheen of the cream, then you planted a kiss on his forehead and thanked him for not making a fuss like last time.
"Can I make a sandcastle? Pwease?" Jisung rolled across the sand, effectively coating his skin in yet more sand as the cream hadn't yet dried, and put on his best puppy face, eyes sparkling with mischief and excitement while you and Jungwoo struggled to lay the beach towel down with the wind working against you.
"Of course you can. We brought the bucket and spade specially. But let us set up first, okay?" Jungwoo replied. Since becoming parents, Jungwoo had mastered his parenting voice, and it was the perfect combination of sweet and commanding to pierce your heart with pride. You definitely fell for the right man.
You two tried to work as fast as possible to get the umbrella at the right angle and find stones to keep the towel in place, and you folded up the chairs while Jisung hangs off your leg, all his limbs clinging to you to remind you that he exists and is still begging to make a sandcastle. Jungwoo, instead of helping, decided it was the perfect moment to whip out his camera and snap photos of the scene.
Finally, you finished sorting everything out and you handed the bucket and spade over to Jisung. His boba eyes lit up and it was only a matter of seconds before he was flinging the spade to one side and digging through the sand with his bare hands. He scooped sand into the bucket one tiny handful at a time.
"Sweetheart, that's not how you're meant to do it." You giggled, rolling your eyes when you caught Jungwoo's laughter of encouragement, and knelt down to demonstrate to Jisung how a spade works. "Look, this way you'll be able to fill the bucket much quicker."
The boy watched in fascination and eventually agreed to try the spade. He gasped in amazement when he managed to fill half the little yellow bucket in one go.
