"Why?"
"Because she's busy, Mark."
Johnny rubs his hand over his cheek and throws Ten a look, who only shrugs and continues colouring. Mark jabs the yellow pencil onto the page with a huff that has his older brother biting the inside of his cheek to stop himself from loosing his cool. Both him and Mark are really testing his patience.
"But why is she busy?" Mark whines again. They've had this conversation at least five times since Mark and Johnny's mother left for a business trip the previous day. She had called Johnny to ask him and Ten to stay at home for the week to babysit the boy. Ten agreed within a heartbeat, while Johnny remained a little reluctant. He'd used the excuse of exams, but the woman knew the season finished a month ago and offered him some money instead. Ten said it was pathetic, but they both laughed about it.
"She has a lot of work to do." Ten places the pencil down and wraps his arms around Mark's waist, pulling him onto his lap which seems to ease the boy's restlessness enough for his pout to even out into a bored expression. "She'll bring you back some goodies, though. She always does, right?"
"Hm." Mark shrugs. His eyes roam over the cartoon lion he's been scribbling over for the past half hour before a glint of excitement flashes through them, and he lurches forward to grab the pencil again and poke at the paper.
"I want a lion onesie!"
"For crying out loud." Johnny pulls a cushion to cover his face as though that would help him deny the reality of having to look after his annoying - but also undeniably cute - little brother.
"Then we can get you a lion onesie." Ten says. Mark claps and cheers, then wriggles out of the Thai's arms, races into the hallway and stands on the tips of his toes to yank his coat off the hook.
"Ten." Johnny makes a poor attempt of launching the cushion at his boyfriend. Ten raises an eyebrow and throws it back, only with better aim and the elder lets out a gentle 'oof' as it hits his chest.
"We've been stuck inside all weekend. We might as well go now that the rain's stopped." Ten holds Johnny's hand but doesn't have the strength to pull him up, so resorts to widening his eyes and puckering his lips to ask for a kiss that Johnny has to sit up to earn.
"He just has so much energy." Johnny mutters once their lips pull apart. Mark squeals from the hallway and shouts for them to hurry up because he can't tie his laces or find his left shoe. "See what I mean?" Ten inspects the bags under his boyfriends eyes and his heart aches from a pang of sympathy because he's just as exhausted himself. But also Mark is too cute to resist.
"I'll buy you something too." Ten promises before heading into the hallway to sort Mark out.
The boy fumbles with the zip on his bright red coat with the fluffy hood, but he has a yellow croc on his left foot and his left trainer on his right foot. Ten smiles as he kneels down to help him.
"Markie, this is your left shoe. Your right shoe's in here. You can't wear crocs to the mall."
"Why not?" Mark asks the question that nudges Johnny forever closer to insanity, and the couple share a short glance before Ten speaks again, voice somehow composed.
