We gave the manager man our names and he placed a 100 dollar bill in front of each of us, pushing it forward. We smiled until we realized that was all he was giving up, as he counted the mounds of money in front of him.
"Now, get out of here." He said noticing we hadn't left yet.
"Wait? A hundred bucks? The ad said three thousand." I furrowed my brow and nodded agreeing with Peter's words.
"Well, check it again, web-head. It said three grand for three minutes. You both pinned your opponents in two. For that, I give you each a hundred. You're lucky to get that." He said stubbornly.
"Whoa, I need that money." I said as I stepped forward.
"I missed the part where that's my problem." He leaned forward towards us, not intimidated at all.
I scoffed and grabbed Peter's arm pulling him out the door. A man with white hair pushed past us into the doorway.
"Unbelievable." I groaned as we waited for the elevator. "I really needed to upgrade my web shooters. Right, now their just from a box of scraps in my basement." I sighed checking them over. They'll work for now, but I need an upgrade."
"Yeah, I'm really sorry about that, Cate. I really wanted to get a car so we didn't have to take the train... Or the bus." Peter sighed. I placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Hurry up!" Someone screamed down at the office.
Peter and I both turned our heads to look. We could see the outline of someone getting bashed over the head. Peter took a step in front of me, instinctively. The door to the elevator opened just as the man with white hair ran from the office.
"Hey! He stole the gate!" The manager shouted.
"Stop that guy!" A guard said appearing from another room.
The man with white hair came right towards us. I lifted my arm slightly and Peter lowered it, pushing us both against the wall for the thief to make his way through to the open elevator without confrontation. The thief frantically pressed the buttons with a gun in his hands as we both just watched him leave.
"Stop him!" The guard shouted.
"He's got my money!" The manager shouted as the two ran down the hall towards us.
"Thanks!" The white haired thief thanked us just as the door closed.
The guard made it to the elevator door just as it closed. He attempted to press the open button, but to no avail it stayed closed and the light above counted down the floors.
"What the hell's the matter with you two? You let him go!" The guard said angrily. He ran past us towards the stair well. "Cut him off in the lobby and call the cops!"
"You both could have taken that guy apart." The manager said approaching us holding his bleeding head. "Now he'll get away with my money."
"I missed the part where that's our problem." Peter threw his words back in his face and the manager looked at us both and walked away without another word.
"Peter." I said softly grabbing his arm. "Are you sure that was the best thing to do? He is right. We totally could have stopped that guy..."
Peter reached over pressing the elevator button again. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it and just smiled at me. I sighed and didn't reply. We got in the elevator and walked out of the building down the street back towards the library, where Uncle Ben was meant to pick us up. We talked quietly for a bit until we heard a bunch of police sirens. The brigade of police cars flew past us and we watched. We noticed a growing group of people standing around something.
