He looks at me everyday. Peter Benjamin Parker. Spider-Man. We made a choice once to live a life of responsibility. A life that both of us are apart of. Who are we? Spider-Woman and Spider-Man, given a job to do. And I'm also Catherine Barrett, and I too, have a job.
"Cate! Cate!" Robbie waved his hand in front of my face.
"Huh? Sorry, Robbie. I was distracted." I apologized to the Head Newspaper Editor of the Daily Bugle. The man just under J. Jonah Jameson. I was busy hearing police sirens outside the building. "What were you saying?" I asked doing my best to give him my undivided attention.
"I was trying to praise your article. I'll never know how you manage to get this information on all the best news scoops in New York. You've quickly raised your way to the top, being one of my best journalists. I might have to tweak it slightly..." He sighed. "You know Jonah and his passive aggressive feelings towards Spider-Man and Spider-Woman." I groaned with a nod.
"I still don't understand it. Haven't they proved enough times that they're the good guys? That they're there to help?" I rolled my eyes.
"I know, I know. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for these exclusive quotes from the greatest superhero's by the way." He thanked me as I grabbed my coat from my desk.
"No problem, chief. Maybe, I'll get an autograph next time and I'll be sure to give you one." I winked and saluted him rushing out the door. I heard him chuckle on my way out of the Daily Bugle.
It's been two years since I was bitten by that Spider. It's a ton of responsibility, but honestly I wouldn't have it any other way. It's also been almost two full years of being with the love of my life. Somehow, we both managed jobs, college, friends, being in a relationship, all while being superheroes. Well, more like I handle it better than he does. Peter has been having a... difficult time with multitasking and managing his life. It's never been an easy thing for that man, even without having a superhero identity.
I webbed up my backpack in the alleyway outside of my apartment as I swung by, wearing my suit. I'd definitely made new technological advances. I bought a fancy expensive metal, called vibranium. It was not cheap, let me tell you and it's rare. But out of the small amount I got I was able to make four sets of web shooters, so I always had back ups. I also integrated it into my suit, so villain's wouldn't easy be able to tell that that's how I shoot my webs. I certainly never wanted to have another experience like I did with the Green Goblin.
I swung around the city, helping out where ever I was needed. I swung around the corner to see a large truck barreling towards a couple kids, about to run into the road after their ball. I gasped and swung down towards them. A red and blue flash appeared beside me grabbing the girl as I grabbed the boy and we landed on the sidewalk.
"Hey, you guys." I ruffled the boys hair.
"No more playing in the street, okay?" Spider-Man told them.
"Yes, Mr. Spider-Man. Thank you, Mrs. Spider-Woman." The said together and I chuckled.
"Good, now run back along to your mom." I ushered them away.
"Oh hey, honey." Peter smirked under his suit.
"Hi." I laughed. "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" I raised an eyebrow, under my mask.
"Right." He turned to walk away.
"I'll see you tonight!" I called after him. He jumped away and I watched him grab a pile of pizza's from a rooftop. I shook my head with a chuckle.
"Great job, Spider-Woman and Spider-Man!" A pedestrian woman called our from behind me. I did my signature salute and swung off again, around the city.
I swung my way to my afternoon writing seminar. I've been taking classes in college for the past two years, to get my bachelors degree in Creative Writing and English. As a full time reporter now, I was making almost 40,000 dollars a year and the amount could only go up from here. I was hired by The Daily Bugle at first as a freelance writer, which didn't earn me much, but Robbie soon gave me a staff job, with a desk and everything without actually having to sit at a desk all day. Being Spider-Woman certainly has it's perks. Especially when it came to journalism. I was almost always there for every crime. So detailed reports were no problem.
"Ms. Barrett." My teacher Mrs. Robertson called out to me after class. I walked up to her desk.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"I was wondering if you've chosen your individual writing assessment yet? I saw your first front page article in the Bugle this morning. Congratulations. It was very well written." She commended me and I smiled.
"Oh wow, thank you. That means a lot. I'm really just lucky the editor likes me." I said bashfully. "I was actually planning on asking my friend, Harry Osborn. He's just recently become the head of special projects at Oscorp. He's the son of the late founder. Last time we spoke he mentioned a big project coming up so, maybe he'll let me write my paper on that." I told her with a positive attitude.
"You've got friends in high places." She chuckled. "I look forward to reading it. Don't forget it due next week."
"I won't!" I said rushing from the class room.
I spent a few hours patrolling again and then made my way to Aunt May's house for a special surprise party for Peter's birthday. I had invited Harry and MJ to the party. Mary Jane and I had been hanging out and talking a lot more within the past two years. She realized her 'friends' from school weren't really her friends. It was nice to have a girl friend I could talk to about things, that the boys wouldn't understand. She was also seeing someone. Jonah Jameson's son. I had introduced the pair, when I met him through Artie.
Artie was still a great big part of my life. He liked Peter, but he wasn't a fan of all the tardiness and how he shirked some of his date nights with me sometimes. Granted he didn't understand the whole situation like I did. Which is why Peter and I have managed to even make it this far. So, he tried introducing me to John Jameson, the astronaut. Hoping maybe we'd fall for each other. We only became good friends and while having coffee one day we ran into MJ. The two of them hit it off immediately. I was really happy for her.
Harry and I were still close friends. He still had feelings for me, I could tell that much. But, he never tried anything knowing how much I loved Peter. He saw more than anyone Peter and I's relationship. On the nights Peter was late or didn't show he was the person I could turn to without as much judgement. We had movie nights one the occasions I was free and just spent genuine best friend time together.
After the events of his father, Harry desperately needed a friend and I was there for him. I suppose part of that was my guilt about what had happened. I felt so guilty about what happened, even though there wasn't much I could do to save Norman Osborn, and I couldn't tell Harry the truth about how he died. So, I just did the best I could to be there for him as much as he needed me to be. Peter also felt really guilty about it. The guilt had the opposite effect on him, making him almost turn away from Harry completely. He struggled to be around him knowing everything that had transpired that night.
