(TW: Death)
WHEN CARINA DORADA WAS FIVE YEARS OLD,
she was overjoyed when her best friend got his gift. The two children snuck away from all the adults, walking together hand in hand through the forest.
It was dark and the only light they had was from Carina's small lantern that she held in her hand.
"Come on Camilo!" Carina giggled, pulling her friend along who couldn't stop transforming into her.
Ever since he had gotten his gift, which was only a few hours ago, he would randomly shapeshift into anybody he laid his eyes on which greatly amused Carina.
Carina made her way over to a big bush her hands pushing past the many leaves that scratched against her skin as she tried reaching for something.
"What are you doing?" Camilo asked, his eyebrows scrunched in confusion as Carina pulled out a small box.
His eyes lit up as a smile pulled on her features, she handed the box over to Camilo who looked very surprised.
He carefully opened the box which was wrapped in a golden paper, once he opened it a large grin set on his face.
In the box lay a golden necklace, on the necklace hung half a star which seemed to be glowing.
"Thank you!" Camilo exclaimed, pulling his best friend into a hug before continuing to admire the necklace she had given him.
"Look! I have the other half!" Carina voiced, pulling out her own necklace which held the other half of his necklace.
She helped Camilo put on his necklace and then held her half of it against his, making the star appear as one again.
"Where did you get this?" Camilo questioned.
"I have to show you!" Carina immediately pulled the younger boy along who dropped the box accidentally.
"Carina where are we going?" Camilo asked, looking around the unfamiliar part of the forest. He had never been there.
His jaw dropped as Carina led him into a cave, everything seemed dark at first when suddenly he noticed a golden light illuminating the cave.
Carina let out a giggle of excitement as she saw the large golden water down below, it was definitely too deep to swim in but just looking at it gave her enough satisfaction.
"I found this place a week ago! I would've shown you earlier but you were too busy." Carina said picking some golden flowers off from the floor.
The golden flowers were glowing brightly, some were swimming above the water surface whilst others were sprawled all around the cave.
"I found the necklaces right here, they were just laying on the floor so I took them!" Carina smiled whilst Camilo still looked mesmerised.
"We have to show the others!" He exclaimed in excitement though Carina shook her head.
"We should keep it a secret! I don't want anybody ruining this place." Carina frowned at the thought of others ruining the beautiful cave.
"They won't ruin it! Come on let's tell them now." Camilo rushed, grabbing her wrist as excitement bubbled inside of him.
Carina didn't move as Camilo tried pulling her along. "Stop it Cami!" Carina said as she tried to get out of his grip.
And then it happened, just as Carina forcefully ripped her wrist out of his grip he let go. Carina stumbled back and fell off the edge, her small body falling straight into the cold water.
Panic overtook her body, she started gasping for air as she tried to stay afloat. She could faintly hear Camilo screaming her name as he tried to help her but her mind was too occupied on staying alive.
The cave lost its glow, all the beautiful golden lights started turning pitch black as Carina's lungs filled with water.
Due to the loud screaming of Camilo, Dolores immediately realised something was wrong. She led the entire family toward the loud shouting and only then realised that they were too late.
Camilo was on the floor, tears streaming down his face as his whole body shook. He was embraced by his parents who had looks of worry.
Andres and Rosa Dorada immediately noticed that their daughter was nowhere to be seen.
It was then that one of the other townspeople had noticed Carina's body in the water.
The agonising scream of Rosa Dorada was something none of them would every forget when they pulled her daughters body out of the murky water.
She had no pulse.
"Rina? Rina please stay with us come on!" Her mother pleaded, her heart racing as nausea took over her.
Carina lay still, her face looked lifeless and cold.
Andres looked over at Dolores who was trying desperately to find a heartbeat.
Dolores was close to tears as she couldn't hear anything from Carina, looking over at her little brother her heart broke even more.
He was sobbing uncontrollably whilst being pulled back by Pepa and Félix who looked very distraught.
"There's no heartbeat." Dolores whispered.
Julieta Madrigal was pushing through the many people who were stood around the cave. Her heart immediately stopped as she saw the small body lying on the floor.
It was too late.
Carina Dorada was dead.
Or so they thought.
A sudden gasp for air made everybody freeze, Dolores's head snapped as she heard Carina's heartbeat increasing again.
Carina's eyes snapped open as she shot up into a sitting position, her mind fuzzy and eyesight hazy.
"She's alive!"
That was the night that everything changed.
