At last, Alluka and I had arrived at the diner. As expected, we could see Gon and Ging sitting in a booth right next to the window. A wave of accomplishment washed through my body as my feet brought me to the entrance of the place.
I assumed Alluka was right behind me. Therefore, I opened the glass doors of the diner and entered with a ding resonating from the bell above. My eyes immediately turned to the side to spot Gon looking directly at me. His eyes were wide and curious but I could see the relief and slight happiness that resonated in them once his eyes landed on mine. I smiled back and began walking, not caring whether or not I was supposed to wait to be seated.
Once I made it to the booth I made eye contact with Ging who was sitting down across from Gon. He looked... different. His usual stubby/ messy beard and mustache was shaved, his once disheveled hair was now combed and styled, his dark eye bags were nowhere to be seen, and his usual hobo-like attire was replaced with something more business casual. I snickered to myself remembering how he had once said to my parents that: 'No matter what happens, I will always be myself.' Guess Ging doesn't really keep his word after all.
"Hey, Uhmm.." an awkward silence spread across us, making an even more awkward atmosphere than when I first made eye contact with my parents' old friend. "Killua," I said for him, deciding to sit next to Gon and holding his hand underneath the table, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Right, Killua, and you are..." I followed Ging's eyes to be met with Alluka standing awkwardly motioning with her eyes for me to move over in the booth. I groaned quietly and forced myself to move over a little, allowing her enough room to sit down. "Alluka," she said, throwing a wobbly smile at the male seated across from us.
"Ahem, what brings you guys here?" He asked, but I knew he was secretly cursing us in his head for interrupting his lovely conversation. "Just wanted to check up on Gon," I shrugged. "Yeah," Alluka added on.
"Why would you guys wanna check up on me?" Gon tilted his head to the side, blissfully oblivious as always. I internally face palmed and gave Gon an 'are you serious' look. Because I was worried about you, dumb ass.
"You weren't with me this morning," I let it slip out of my mouth, unbeknownst to the prying ears that were overhearing our conversation. "You guys had a sleepover?" Ging questioned, butting into the conversation and irritating me.
"Yeah!" Gon exclaimed happily, I could feel his legs bouncing up and down and swinging back and forth underneath the table. "That's good you guys are still friends.." Ging said it almost uncertainly, as if he didn't remember whether we were friends or not.
I hummed in response, my eyes scanning Ging's expression warily. "Well, anyways, back to what we were talking about Gon," Ging said, slightly adjusting himself to be more comfortable in his seat. "I really want you to meet my wife. I think it's important that we you know, get to uhmm know each other more." Ging sounded so reluctant that it pissed me off.
"We have a lot to catch up on, don't you think?"
"Yeah!" Gon sounded so happy, happy that his dad actually wanted to spend time with him. Happy that the absent father in his life was now finally acknowledging him. I, on the other hand was pretty pissed. Lately, I've been more thoughtful towards others thanks to me falling in love with a certain someone.
I don't get how Gon could just so easily forgive Ging for leaving him with his aunt all alone. No dad should ever just leave their own kid behind. Especially since I'm pretty sure Ging didn't say anything about leaving. He just straight up left one day so he could 'find his true self out in the real world and take a break from reality', or some crap like that. Gon didn't show how hurt he was when Ging left but I know he was. I know he was scared of getting abandoned again after. I know that he craves his dad's validation. I know that him leaving most likely left a permanent scar on Gon.
