(The present)

"So," you took a deep and shaky breath, "I guess that's what you were looking for?"

Steven looked up at you from his notebook, speechless. After a moment, he gingerly took your hand.

"(Y/N)," he started, "I am so sorry that happened... I can't believe that he-" Steven took his hand back and formed a tight fist. "Kevin..." Steven seemed to disappear in his mind for a moment.

"Steven?" You said, bringing him back, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah..." Steven looked back to you, "I'm fine."

He shook it off and reviewed his notes, reminding himself that it wasn't about him right now.

"So, you've covered the facts, but so far, I'm not getting a lot of feeling," Steven said, looking between his writing and you.

"Oh... right," you said sheepishly.

"So... how did all of that make you feel?" Steven asked gently, not wanting to make you upset.

"I..." You thought for a moment. I mean... how did you feel? You broke up with the boy you were in love with and you didn't even cry. You put everything behind you so you wouldn't fall apart. Maybe... maybe this is what you needed.

"I... was angry. And... hurt. Betrayed? I mean... how could he be so... selfish?" You began to heat up, "And-and two-faced! He lied to me... over, and over, and... and I let him..."

You paused, tears pricking at your eyes.
Don't cry, you thought.

"You wanna know something?" You looked up at Steven, "I really loved him. I thought that maybe..." you trailed off and looked to the side. "You know he's got a new girlfriend now? Some cute little thing," you chuckled bitterly. "She has no idea."

You paused, feeling lighter than before, and yet- much more vulnerable. You felt your anxiety creeping back, until you looked back at Steven, who had his eyes wide open.

"Hey, Steven... you're staring a bit."

"No, I'm not."

After a solid five seconds of uninterrupted silent eye contact- Steven perked up.

"I think I've got something! Here- listen," he said, pulling his guitar back in front of him.

"Well you found someone new
Ain't it grand, ain't it swell
No- I'm happy for you
Yeah, I'm glad you're doing well-"

You interrupted; "What?! No, I'm not."

"Shh," Steven laughed, "stay with me."

"I hope you treat her better
Hope you're happy, happy with her.
No, I promise I'm not bitter
Yeah I'm glad you're doing better"

You still didn't know where he was going with the song, but something in his smile told you to trust him on this.

"Without me.
I'm sure that you'd agree;"

Steven stopped and looked at you, serious. Then, he suddenly started smiling again and continued;

"That all that stuff is bullshit."

You laughed.

"Call me fake but so are you
Tell your girlfriend you can't commit
Cause there's one thing you can't seem to do-"

Holy shit. This is so cool! And... so catchy! You decided to chime in, since it's your song too.

"So it seems I've been replaced," Steven smiled at you, not expecting you to sing.

"But I don't care about her or
you
can't help being two-faced
Through and through"

Steven began to sing the chorus, smiling with you the whole time.

"Two faced
Untrustworthy, disgraced
You can't help being yourself
If you know who that is-"

You began to sing with him;

"Yeah you're
Two faced
Untrustworthy, disgraced
You can't help being yourself
If you know who that is-
Yeah."

The last chord hung in the air above the two of you as a shiver went down your spine. That was... so... cool. You wanted to blast that song in your car with the windows down!

"Steven..." you whispered, "that was incredible."

He flipped his guitar over onto his back and swiftly covered the growing blush on his face in doing so.

"No... no you were the one who was incredible! Your voice is amazing, (Y/N)." He couldn't hide his blush this time, but the sweet moment was quickly interrupted when Amethyst appeared atop the mysterious... thingy. At least you knew what it was for now.

"Hey, Amethyst!" Steven greeted the gem.

"Sup dude! And... dudette?" Amethyst cocked her head to the side.

"Oh, right," Steven rose from the couch, "Amethyst, this is (Y/N). (Y/N), this is Amethyst."

"I-it's a pleasure to meet you," you said to her, trying your best not to completely geek out.

"(Y/N)'s doing the talent show, too, and I was helping her with her act," Steven explained.

"Cool, cool," Amethyst replied absentmindedly, rummaging through the kitchen cabinets. She shrunk herself down and disappeared inside one of the doors before emerging with a giant- well, giant compared to her- container of cheese balls. She grew back to her normal size and popped the lid off the container.

"Yo, Steven, you want some?" Amethyst asked, already elbow-deep in the cheese.

"I'll pass," the boy replied, chuckling slightly.

"Alrighty then. Suit yourself," Amethyst said before dumping... the entire container down her throat. She tossed the empty container to Steven and hopped back onto the teleportation device.

"Amethyst outtie," she said, before disappearing with a huge ray of light.

Before you got even a second to process what just happened, Steven looked to you;

"Okay then! Where were we?"
