Waiting on a Miracle

"La familia Madrigal!" Cheered all the family members who got their photo taken. Well, almost all the family members.

It was at least 5 minutes into Antonio's party when Dolores pulled Camilo aside. "Woah, Dolores? What's wrong?" He asked, noticing the look on her face. "Follow me." And so he did, not knowing that their other cousins and youngest brother followed them out as well.

"So what?" Asked Camilo. Dolores shushed him and pointed to the middle of Casita's open area where Mirabel was singing her heart out.

"I can't move the mountains. I can't make the flowers bloom. I can't take another night up in my room. Waiting on a miracle." Camilo looked at his cousin sadly. He didn't know she felt like this.

"I can't heal what's broken. Can't control the morning rain or a hurricane. Can't keep down the unspoken invisible pain.
Always waiting on a miracle, a miracle." Isabela listened and felt bad. Maybe her belittling of her little sister really affected Mirabel.

"Always walking alone. Always wanting for more. Like I'm still at that door longing to shine. Like all of you shine." Antonio clutched the tiger stuff she gave him tightly. Mirabel was always strong, right?

"All I need is a change. All I need is a chance. All I know is I can't stay on the side. Open your eyes, open your eyes, open your eyes." Mirabel sang as she ran up the steps, stopping in front of her Abuela's door.

"I would move the mountains. Make new trees and flowers grow. Someone please just let me know where do I go. I am waiting on a miracle, a miracle." Luisa was pretty surprised. Mirabel always acted like she didn't care that the family had gifts. She didn't realize that she was drowning in their shadows.

"I would heal what's broken. Show this family something new. Who I am inside, so what can I do? I'm sick of waiting on a miracle, so here I go." Mirabel sang as she slid down the banister, not even once looking in the general direction of her cousins.

"I am ready." Ready for her life to change? Wondered Dolores. "Come on, I'm ready! I've been patient and steadfast and steady."

"Bless me now as you blessed us all those years ago. When you gave us a miracle!" Belted Mirabel, letting all of her bottled up emotions into that one note, blowing away her cousins.

A few moments of silence passed before Mirabel sighed. "Am I too late for a miracle?" She sang softly, tears pooling in her eyes.

Meanwhile, her cousins and siblings all realized they were there and quickly headed back to the party, so as to not draw questions to where they were.

Mirabel sighed before wiping her eyes and going back to the party. She tried putting on a smile to not worry anyone who would care to look closely enough.

A man glanced at his niece sadly. Oh, he wished he could change the future, just this once.
