One evening I was hanging out at the Curtis' house waiting for my boyfriend (or best friend), Sodapop, to come home. He was working one of those long shifts at the DX. Luckily, it was summer break, so school was out for two months. It was getting late, 10pm. It was pitch black out. I still waited for him to come home. I only live down the street so it's not far of a walk, so I should be fine on my own. Sodapop cleared my thoughts as he came through the door. I gave him a smile and got up to hug him,
"Hey Pepsi, how was your day?" I ask in a tired tone.
"It was alright. Long and busy." He sighed. I felt bad and let go so he could go to bed. But Darry hollered at him to come back.
"Sodapop, there was a letter in the mail for you. Could you come get it so it doesn't start to pile up?" Darry yelled so Soda could here from upstairs.
"Yeah one Moment Darry." Soda replied.
I wonder what the letter is for.. I thought to myself
Soda came running down. He had already changed into his pyjamas. He grabbed the letter and opened it. As started to read and as soon as he finished he froze. His face went pale. He looked like he had seen a ghost. Worse then a ghost.
"Soda, Baby, what's wrong?" I ask standing up holding his hands in mine. I could see his eyes getting watery. He walked over to the couch with his hands on his face. I take this opportunity to grab the letter from the floor and read it.
Man, I regret reading that.
I felt everything go numb. I couldn't move or speak. My face was getting wet and I was sweating like crazy. I was shacking. I was having a panic attack. I didn't know how to think or what to say. I just stood there with the letter in my hands.
This is a dream. This is a dream. This is a dream. I repeated in my head.
Darry and Ponyboy both looked confused and scared. Darry took the letter as I fell to the ground. The next thing I see is my head laying in Sodas lap. All I could hear were faint sniffles and Ponyboy sobbing in his bedroom. I forgot what happened.
I sat up and my head starting aching.
"What happened? Why are you all crying." I asked. Everything flooded back when I saw the look on Sodas face.
The letter. He was being drafted.
I couldn't let that happen. I wouldn't let him be taken away from me. I collapsed in his arms. His cold hands rubbing my back reassuring me everything was going to be ok, and that he would be back. He promised he would make it home. That made me feel a little bit better. My breathing calmed down. I hugged him. I wanted that hug to last forever.
"When are you leaving?.." I asked. I didn't want the answer. I didn't want him to leave for War.
He just sighed. His eyes were red and puffy from all the crying,
"I leave tomorrow, Y/N.."
No.
No.
No he can't leave.
Not yet.
He's not leaving.
He's just kidding.
