Birthdays Are Overrated

Kageyama's POV

I slowly lift my eyelids, awakening from my slumber. The bright sun hits me in the eye. I slam my hand on my alarm, deafening the sound. I get up from my cozy, warm bed to get ready for school. I throw on my uniform and grab my already packed bag. I walk out the door without bothering to eat my breakfast. I'll just have some milk from a vending machine when I get to school.

I make it to school, but the gym doors are still locked. I guess I'm early. I walk to the nearest vending machine to get some milk. While I'm deciding which flavor I want to get, I spot a flash of orange in the corner of my eye.

"Hey, Tobio! How are you doing?"

"I'm fine, I guess. Which flavor of milk do you think I should get?"

"Okay first, stop drinking so much milk. It's weird. Second, why are you only 'fine I guess'. Today should be a great day!"

"Well, nothing particularly interesting is happening today, so I have no reason to be feeling 'great'."

"Well, that doesn't seem good. I'm sure you have some things planned for later though, right?"

"Why would I have anything planned? Is there something going on today?"

"Um...yes? Are you pranking me or something? Oh! That reminds me..."

He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small box with wrapping paper on it; he hands the box to me.

"Happy birthday Tobio!"

I stare at him all confused. I pull out my phone and check the date. 'December 22, 2021' Huh, I guess it is my birthday today. I don't remember ever telling Shoyo though? Whatever, it doesn't matter.

"I guess it is my birthday today. Who would've thought?"

"Eh? Don't tell me you forgot your birthday!"

"I guess I did. Thank you for the gift, I'll open it when I get back home."

"Wait, wait, wait. Back up. How could you forget your birthday?!"

"I never really cared about it, let's get to practice now."

"O-okay?"

Then we spent the rest of the school day as we normally do. Just a normal Wednesday. Nothing significant. I guess the only person I told about my birthday was Shoyo because everyone else is acting normal.

It's the end of the day, and Shoyo and I are walking back to my place. He had insisted on coming over to my house and getting a cake for me. I don't know how the hell he knows what my favorite flavor is, but whatever. I won't question it.

I unlock my door, and we walk in. He sets the cake on my table. He motions for me to sit down on the chair next to him. I sit down and he hands me the knife.

"You have to cut the cake while I sing, okay?"

"Alright."

"Happy birthday to you~

Happy birthday to you~

Happy birthday dear Tobio~

Happy birthday to you~"

His voice is angelic. I could hear him sing all day. I'm pretty sure most people find it awkward when people are singing happy birthday to them, but I didn't mind it. I think that's because it was just me and Shoyo. No one else.

"Yayyyyyy! Did you make a wish Tobio?"

I forgot to make a wish, but he doesn't need to know that. It's stupid anyway. It's not like the wish would come true.

"Yea, I did."

"Great! Can we cuddle now?"

"Mmk."

I pull into my room onto my bed. I lay him down facing the wall, while I spoon him from the back. I snuggle my face into his neck and rest it there. After a while, when I thought he was sleeping, he breaks the silence.

"Tobio, how come you don't care about your birthday?"

"I don't know why you would need to celebrate it. It's so stupid. 'Yay, I'm another year closer to death. Isn't that great!'."

"No! That's not what it is at all. It's more like 'Yay, I didn't die today. Looks like I get to live another year!' Also, it's celebrating the fact that you were born!"

"Birthdays are overrated. I barely even celebrate other people's birthdays. I just don't care about it."

"You'll at least celebrate my birthday though, right?"

"If you want me to."

"Of course, I want you to!"

"Alright, so what do you want for your birthday?"

"It's your birthday today, so stop talking about my birthday!"

"Alright, alright. Fine."

"Do you want to open my gift now?"

"Sure."

I get up and reach for the small box. Shoyo sits up as well, very eagerly awaiting my reaction. It's a volleyball keychain with the number 9 on it.

"Do you like it? I thought it would be a good keepsake to remember when you go professional."

"Thank you, I love it." I smile softly.

"Yayyy, I knew you would like it!"

He looks really happy. I guess he just really likes birthdays.

Maybe birthdays aren't so overrated.
