I texted Peter, letting him know I was going home. I felt bad ditching him, but Jamie was spamming my phone with messages. When I arrived at her place, she nearly jumped out of her seat, rushing over to me. My eyes diverted toward the clock on the wall.

7:00 p.m.

It wasn't that late. Jamie was just overreacting, I guess.

"Oh my god, Rose! Where have you been?" She questioned me, running a hand down the side of my face. I swatted it away, placing my backpack down. I couldn't tell her what we were doing at Oscorp. I promised Peter I'd keep it between me and him.

"I went to Peter's house to study for a test." The lie rolled on my tongue so effortlessly. It was so easy to block the truth, yet it felt so wrong.

"Study." She emphasized the word, pouring a glass of wine for herself.

"Yup." I hummed, taking a book out of my bag. I strode toward the couch, fluffing a pillow before I lied down. I caught myself constantly looking at my phone, waiting for a text from Peter. He hadn't replied back to my message earlier and I haven't heard from him since.

Before I started reading my novel, I scrolled through my contact list, tapping on one of my recent contacts.

"Hello?" She chirped up, sounding as calm as always.

"Hey, Gwen. Do you know if Peter is still there?" I sat up, placing my book on the coffee table by the decorative fruit bowl. Some shuffling was heard from the other end as if she was moving away from something.

"No, I thought he was with you," Her tone sounded concerned like mine, "And my shift ended an hour ago. I'm not at Oscorp right now."

"Oh, I didn't know. Maybe we shouldn't overthink this. He's probably at his house." I tried to stay positive, straying away from the possibilities.

"Yeah, he could've gone to sleep early." She chimed in on the guesses. I ended the call shortly after, noticing Gwen's raspy voice through the screen. I tapped on the "Call" button right under Peter's name, hearing it ring a few times. I know I reassured Gwen he was fine, but I still felt the need to check up on him.

"Yeah?" His breaths were heavy, loud enough for me to hear. In the background was a loud rattling sound, kind of like the sound of wheels on metal.

"Peter? Where are you?" I asked, leaning my phone closer to my ear. It took him a second to respond.

"I-I uh, I'm on the subway." That made sense. But that didn't explain his breathless state.

"What were you doing? You sound exhausted." Was he running around in there? It sounded like he was jumping off the walls.

"Oh, I was just- I almost missed my ride so I ran here." His story sounded believable. Anyone would've bought it, except his best friend. Lying was a big weakness for him.

"You're stuttering." I lowered my voice, urging him to spill the truth.

"Hey- erm, the service is really bad down here. Talk later, yeah?" He said in a single breath.

"Wait! Peter-" A beep rang through the phone, signaling the call had ended. What the hell. He can't just leave my questions unanswered. I turned around on the couch, noticing Jamie wasn't in the kitchen anymore. She must've fallen asleep. I contemplated sneaking out to talk to Peter, but I knew better. Instead, I dragged myself to my room, throwing myself on my bed. The moment my head hit the sheets, I was out.

"Maybe he was telling the truth." Gwen defended after I told her what happened on the phone with Peter last night. We went to her locker when our free period began. She wanted to reorganize her stuff or something.
