The next day, Peter didn't come to school. Nor the following day or the day after that. I was tempted to check up on him, but he chose to be alone. I'd constantly look behind me during math to see if he was sitting in his seat.
News spread like wildfire in Midtown. Nearly everyone heard about that night, specifically about Peter.
Gwen and I would sit in silence in the library, not looking up from our books. There was nothing we could possibly say without making things more awkward.
That was until she decided to speak up one day.
"Have you heard from him today?" She asked, writing in her notebook. I shot my head up, causing some hairs to fall loose from the low bun I lazily made.
"No...no, I haven't. I might stop by after school. I don't know." I rested my cheek on the palm of my hand, turning the page on the book I was reading.
"You should. He might think he needs to be alone, but what he needs is someone to comfort him." Gwen said, tapping her pencil on the table.
"I suppose you're right. But what about May?"
Gwen let out a tired sigh, looking at me for the first time today. She let go of her pencil, grabbing one of my hands.
"If you really cared about him, you would've gone to see him days ago. I can't believe you're even questioning to go visit him. Aren't you guys really close or something?"
I bit my inner cheek, staring at her hand on mine. She was right. She's always right. Peter shouldn't have to go through this alone. Besides, I miss my best friend.
I stood up from my chair, shoving my schoolwork in my backpack.
"Do you have a car?" She suddenly asked before I left the table. I mean, I have a license but I don't own a car. I shook my head. Gwen reached into her pocket, taking out her car keys. She tossed them at me, smiling.
"Gwen- thank you!"
"Don't crash my car, Rose!" She whisper shouted as I dashed through the double doors, earning a glare from the librarian.
Gwen's car was nearly identical to Jamie's, so I knew exactly how to work it. I pulled out of the student parking lot, heading towards Peter's neighborhood.
I glanced at my reflection on the mirror, seeing I was a hot mess. When the traffic lights turned red, I fixed up my hair, letting it fall on my shoulders. There wasn't much I could do about my eye bags, but Peter's seen worse.
I pulled into the Parkers' driveway, parking right next to Uncle Ben's truck. My eyes locked on his pickup. Just staring at it made my mood drop. It looked as if something were missing...or someone.
I hopped out of the car, eager to see Peter again. As I leaned in to knock on their door, which they fixed, it swung open, revealing a tired, messy-haired boy standing before me.
"Rose?"
"Peter?"
"What are you doing-"
"I came to see how you were doing." I told him, fighting the urge to throw my arms around him. He looked adorable with his hair sticking out in different directions. Did he just wake up?
"Oh- um, I was actually going to go to yours." He admitted, grinning. Someone was clearly feeling better.
"You know I would've still been at school, right?" I corrected him, watching him bury his face in his hand. He walks outside, shutting the door to give us some privacy. I leaned my back against one of the wooden pillars while he stood in front of me.
