"Bruno, do you see anything?"
"It's blurry.... I can't—wait. Over there!"
The pair looks to the side of the silvery green dome, "Is that a.... a snake?"
"Looks like you're taming it. That's amazing! You're going to be a snake charmer this time."
"Oh for crying out loud." The swirling sand falls to the ground around them as the ritual finishes, covering their hair and ruanas. The girl brushes her hair and picks up the green slate where a vision of her was etched in the mirror, a frown visible on her feature as she tosses it aside to break. "I appreciate the weekly check up, but I think my Mamá is just overreacting about everything. I'm still fine, aren't I? I'm still alive after all these years, you don't have to force yourself to do visions to ensure I'd still live a couple of days longer."
The youngest of the Madrigal triplets, Bruno, has been on a routine with Carina Guerrera to see if anything would give signs of danger than could potentially lead to her sudden death— as what her parent is emphasizing. She's a wild thing, her mother, Haidi, wouldn't want another accident happening to her after all the events that the gurl went through when she was young. Luckily enough, Haidi is friends with the Encanto's founder, Alma Madrigal, and used the opportunity to make the boy do visions to ensure that the wild natured girl wouldn't get into any more trouble, since Bruno was always the one who had first came into rescue.
Ever since he gained his power, Bruno had been having a difficult time dealing with his visions and people's requests. They were all scared of how accurate it was, though he was just only able to give a warning. It turned the tide on the boy, making him the evil seer who'd seal their fates once read. But not with the Guerreras. No. Out of all the people who knew him, only Carina—his best friend— stayed alongside him, and her small family welcomed him in their home to play with his only friend. They've been close up 'till they've come of age. Bruno can't have her put herself into trouble, so he had been really careful and did visions with Carina first before they come to the Guerrera's residence and make Haidi watch it again.
"Remember what I said?"
"More like what all of you are saying," she mutters.
"One vision doesn't compare to—"
"Countless possibilities," Carina sighs, "I know. I get it. But aren't you getting wear off of all this stuff? Your powers may be proving beneficial for someone like me who's death's fiancé—" Bruno rolls his eyes, "—but knowing what future holds is just... taking out all of the thrill in living. Where's the fun in that if you already know what's coming to you?"
"Well, Señora Haidi's been offering me a lot of buñuelos, there were plenty cute and tiny ones too, so either way it's a win-win for me."
She punches him on the shoulder, "You and your buñuelos. If you continue giving her such high praises for it, she may end up throwing away being a widow to marry you."
Bruno scoffs dusting his cloak from all the sand, "Stop giving me ideas, Carina. I'd rather not have you calling me Papá now."
"Okay, you did not need to say that," she fake gagged.
For eighteen year olds, these two looks as if they wouldn't dare grow up in their child minded phase. Their parents aren't against it as long as Bruno's predictions can be kept to himself, which for almost all times, resulted in bad omens. Giving him something to do— or more like babysitting Carina to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid— gave the town a piece of mind from his strange visions that had always created problems for Alma.
They've already come to that age where they're supposed to be helping out more in the town and finding potential partners, but Carina wouldn't think of such thing. She couldn't dream of having anything beyond this phase where she's free to be herself, to run around and be with... the only guy she'd ever dream of marrying someday. Bruno on the other hand would more likely have a hard time finding a partner for himself. Not only does the town ostracize him, but he doesn't have a lot of connections with anyone other than this girl in his vision quarters who seemingly likes to wear her younger brother's clothes to be more comfortable.
"Bruno?"
"What is it?"
"Have you ever read your own future?"
He stares at her blankly, feeling his soul melt to the ground. He faces away towards the corners where he'd stack most of his predictions for a clear image etched in jade. "I don't want to."
"Why?" Carina plops herself on the hill of sand, not minding that her hair would need a bath for later. A very unladylike characteristic that her mother has always frowned upon.
"Because I know I don't have one."
She scoops a handful of sand and throws it at him, a sort of gesture to wake him up from overthinking, "What do you mean 'I don't have one'? You of all people, a Madrigal, not having a future?"
"It just makes sense, you know," he shrugs, his smile turning more and more glum, "For all I know, I'd only be stuck in here alone, deprived of society. Not getting a wife.... or kids, or a fiancé. Yeah, I expect that future for myself."
"You're joking, right? Like hell I'd leave you to rot in this stairway-to-heaven slash hell kind of bedroom. If you're not gonna marry before me then I may as well keep your sorry butt company."
"Your Mamá will never let you do that," he chuckles.
"I swear on the miracle that I will," she looked him in the eye in determination. "And if that's not enough, then—"
"Carina!" They hear Julieta yell from below, "You promised to help me create that special empanada. It's already four, get your butt down here! I am not gonna come up these hell to heaven stairs!"
The both of them pursed their lips to prevent from laughing, Carina wasn't as close with Bruno's siblings like she does with him, but they still treat her like so. She'll go from boyish to girly as soon as she's out of Bruno's range when Carina's with the two of the triplets.
"Well, I guess that's that. I'll go ahead un the kitchen while you clean up my mess."
"Yeah. Your mess," his eyes squinted at her.
Before she comes out the door, Carina points a finger at him, "I'll prove to you that your prediction this time is not life-threatening!"
"It's two over twenty nine bets that you've won. Better make it count, Carina. One last vision and I'm going to tell you who you'll marry in the future."
"Nope. No, no, no, no, no, no—" her words kept echoing even after leaving for the bridge. Carina truthfully wants to know, but at the same time, is too afraid that it will not be him. Of course, Bruno won't ever get to guess that one thought, she's hellbent on keeping her lips sealed until he develops some kind of thing for her as well.
