authors note: this story is getting a little longer than my usual stories, but that's okay! i just want you all to know, iris and soda are both people with trauma or really complicated lives, and they're healing with one another, so with that being said, this story is probably gonna be really long lol i hope you are all enjoying it tho, i love you all!!
iris's pov
"wake up iris," soda whispered, running his hands through my hair. "what time is it?" i asked. "almost noon, the gang is here though," he said. "oh shit," i said covering myself with the covers. "caught ya red handed," two-bit said walking in along with the rest of them. "aw look iris got laid," dally said.
"get out," i yelled. "let us get dressed we'll be down in a minute," soda said. "that's why they slept in til noon," steve said laughing. soda threw a pillow at them and they all left. i sighed and got out of the bed putting sweats and sodas shirt on. "i preferred you the other way," he said. "get up, let's go," i laughed. he put his sweats on and we walked down stairs.
"hey soda i think you forgot a shirt," darry said. "i stole it," i replied, grabbing milk from the fridge. i poured it in the cup and looked around for the chocolate powder. "soda where's the-," before i could finish he handed it to me. "thanks," i said.
"also why are you all here?" i asked. "what we can't come see you?" two-bit asked. "no it's not that, you just usually wait for me to go to the curtis's," i said. "we just wanted to see why you were takin so long," johnny said. "gotcha," i said. "would anyone be up for camping this weekend," i asked. "hell no," dally said. "i would," darry said. "i'll go," johnny said.
"i will if evie can go," steve said. "fine with me," i said. "i guess i'll go," two-bit said. "i'm in," ponyboy said. "of course," soda said. we all looked over at dally and he rolled his eyes. "fine whatever man, i'll go," dally said. "good," i said. "why camping? isn't that a little random?" ponyboy asked. "yeah, but it's getting warmer now and i need to get out of the house, plus my moms coming home," i replied.
"that explains it," he said. "we can leave after i get off work on friday," darry said. "deal, steve and soda do you have work on friday?" i asked. "yeah but we can get saturday and monday off," steve said. "perfect," i said.
friday evening
"get your asses in the cars," darry yelled as everyone argued about whether to go in dally or darry's car. me and two-bit booked it to dally's car, johnny following since dally wanted him in his car. the rest of them went with darry.
dally took off immediately, driving like a maniac. "i love darry, but this is way more fun," johnny said. "same her johnnycakes," i said. "i know i'm awesome," dally said. "shut it," two-bit said. i laughed and we finally got to the perfect spot.
"let's set everything up, then we can make tent arrangements," darry said. "i call dibs on soda," i said and they all laughed. "that's not what i- nevermind," i said. "i want darry to help me set one up, the rest of you are dumb," i said. "fine with me," darry said. we set all the tents up and it was time for sleeping arrangements.
"there is 9 of us, and 3 tents," darry said. "sooo, me and soda get our own and you guys can all share," i said. "no," they all said and i sighed. "it was worth a shot," i shrugged. "okay dally, johnny, ponyboy you're in that one," darry said pointing. "steve, soda, evie and iris, you're in that one," he said pointing to the next one. "me and two-bit will be in this one," he said. "no take steve he snores," i said. "exactly why he's with you," darry said.
"hey!" steve said. we all laughed and got blankets and pillows in the tents. "hey dar come help me start this fire!" i yelled after we set up. "coming!" he yelled. "would nobody else help ya?" he asked. "no they would if they knew how," i said and he laughed. we got it started and all sat around the fire, roasting marshmallows and talking.
it got into a deep talk about how we all missed charlotte and darrel sr. i think we all avoided talking about my dad for a little while until steve asked what i was gonna do with his house. "i don't know, i'll probably sell it, just gotta get all of our stuff out first," i said. "allen ripley," dally said shaking his head. "he was the best," evie said. "i know he was," i said.
"i miss him, i shouldn't have ever left otherwise i would've had more time with him," i said. "it isn't your fault iris," ponyboy said. "yeah it's your bitch of a mothers fault," dally said. "yeah, but i could've visited more," i shrugged, standing up and walking over to the water. i grabbed a rock and threw it, looking up at the stars. i missed him so much.
i knew he was watching over me, but i just wish he could be here with me. i felt soda wrap his arms around my waist and i leaned into his chest. "you okay," he asked. "yeah," i whispered. "are you sure?" he asked, kissing my cheek. "no, but i'm always fine," i replied. "it's okay to be sad iris," he said turning me around.
i looked up at him and sighed. "soda, it's selfish of me to be upset," i said. "no it isn't iris, why do you think that?" he asked. "i just, you lost both of your parents, sandy, you had to drop out of school for your brothers, and i just lost my dad it's not as painful as what you've been through i just hate being upset about it," i said. "iris, it doesn't matter, you can't compare our pain okay? it doesn't matter either way because it still hurts," he said. "i'm sorry," i whispered.
"don't be," he said. "but if you need too, let it out, it's okay to not be okay," he added. "i know," i said as the rest of them walked over. "everything okay?" ponyboy asked. "yeah we're worried about ya iris," steve said. i took a deep breath. "i'm f-," i stopped myself from saying i'm fine. i'm not fine. i haven't been fine since he died. since before he died.
i haven't been fine in years. i looked between all of them, waiting for me to say i'm okay, or i'll be okay, i'm fine, but it wasn't coming. i couldn't fake it anymore. i tried to say it but i couldn't. i just burst into tears and cried into sodas arms.
"it's okay, let it out," soda whispered. "i can't do it anymore soda," i said. "it hurts so bad, and it's my fault," i said. "no it isn't iris," he said. "yes it is, i ruin everything," i whispered and fell to the ground. this was my breaking point. i didn't wanna fight anymore, i didn't wanna live without my dad, my abusive mother was the only blood i had left. i couldn't live with that.
"iris breathe, come on deep breaths it's gonna be okay i've got you," soda said. i took deep breaths and sighed as the tears slowed, but still ran down my cheeks. "i'm sorry you had to witness that," i said to the gang. "don't be," ponyboy said sitting to my right, as soda wrapped his arm around me from my left. they all sat down around me and i sighed.
"iris, you don't have to pretend with us, we're a family and we'd never judge you for not being okay," ponyboy said grabbing my hand. "he's right, you're like my sister, i'm always here for you," evie said. "i love you guys," i said, wiping my tears away. "we love you too," they all said. "but i love you most," soda whispered in my ear. i smiled and looked up and kissed him, then we all sat there in silence for a long time.
