Chapter 9: Burgle Balls Attack

Petey, Maddie, and Lil' Petey were working on the Robo-Rat 2000. Grampa walked in and saw what they were doing. "Hey, what's going on down here?" He asked.

"We're building the Robo-Rat 2000," Lil' Petey answered.

"Hmm, let me guess, you and your mama here are the smart ones with all the ideas," Grampa said before pointing at Petey. "And he's the mooch riding on your coattails."

"Why don't you mind your own beeswax, Dad," Petey said, working on the Robo-Rat 2000.

"Why? Whatcha gonna do? Cry?" Grampa taunted before turning to Maddie and Lil' Petey. "You two should've seen this big crybaby when he was just a kitten."

Grampa started to cry mockingly before whispering to Maddie and Lil' Petey. "Did he ever tell you two about his tail?" Grampa asked.

"That's enough, Dad!" Petey said, getting fed up.

"Haven't you ever wondered why your guys' tails are round at the end and his tail is flat?" Grampa asked before turning to Petey. "Go on, tell them what happened."

"Knock it off, Dad," Petey told Grampa.

"Why? Are you afraid they they won't love you anymore when they find out what a loser you really are?" Grampa continued to taunt Petey.

Maddie remembered the time she saw Petey again after she quit the Critter Scouts. She was visiting her grandma's friend at the shelter she worked at when she saw Petey and his mom. Petey's mom was very nice, kind, forgiving, and hopeful.

Maddie couldn't help but notice that Petey's tails as different. Back when they were in the Critter Scouts, Petey's tail was round, now it was flat.

Petey told Maddie it was an accident, but he never explained how it happened. He never liked talking about it, and Maddie, being his true friend, understood and didn't try to pressure him into going into details.

The four were  interrupted as the TV turned on and Sarah Hatoff appeared on it. "We interrupt this dramatic scene with breaking news," she said. "A bunch of Burgle Balls are on the loose! Let's the clip!"

Burgle Balls were going store stealing from them. The first store was a jewelry store. It stole diamond rings there. Next, it stole money from a bank. Burgle Balls stole and stole. Skateboards, candy and gum, fake doo Doo and whoopee cushion got stolen.

At the police station, Chief was sleeping at his desk in his office, with Dog Man laying in his lap. They woke up when the phone rung.

"Hello?" Chief answered.

"Hi, I'm Dr. Scum," Dr. Scum's voice was heard on the other line. "I'm taking over the city, and Dog Man can't stop me!"

"Dog Man, there's a new villain in town," Chief told Dog Man.

"I'm not new!" Dr. Scum said, annoyed.

"You must stop this new threat to society," Chief said.

"Come on, I was in the first book," Dr. Scum said.

"Go catch the new bad guy," Chief ordered Dog Man.

"Seriously, I had a big role in Chapter 2!" Dr. Scum said, still annoyed.

Dog Man ran out of the police station and into the city. He ran past Sarah. "Oh, look, here comes Dog Man," Sarah said, noticing her friend. "He'll stop those pesky Burgle Balls!"

Dog Man approached one of the Burgle Balls and growled at it. Dog Man stopped and remembered the therapy Lil' Petey and Maddie gave him. He didn't want to any baths. Fearful, Dog Man started to run.

"Uh oh," Sarah said as she watched Dog Man run away. Dog Man hid into a trash can, the Burgle Ball passing by.

Back at Petey's lab, everyone had watched the news. This worried Maddie and Lil' Petey.

"Uh oh, we gotta go save the world, Petey,"  Maddie told Petey.

"Hey, that's a good idea,  you guys should go," Grampa said. "Make me proud, son."

Maddie, Petey, and Lil' Petey exited the lab on their finished Robo-Rat 2000. Grampa waved at them with an evil grin on his face.
