The situation Katsuki was in was not his fault. Absolutely, one-hundred percent, not his fault. How was he supposed to know that the idiot who decided to bother him was actually someone from the hero course who also happened to be good at self defense?
Okay. Maybe it was his fault.
He was walking with his siblings with a Popsicle in his hand, the afternoon sun hotter than it should have been in the middle of fall. The two children chattered happily beside him, Dipsas strangely quiet. He had been suspiciously silent for the last few days and it was-don't tell the devil this-making him worry. But he pushed that to the back of his mind and decided to focus on the one free day he had with his siblings.
Why a free day, you may ask?
Because he had just learned that the crime rate had shot up, due to a lack of heroes in the area. They were all either sent out to do hero work elsewhere or were taking "sick leave"- another way of saying that they were taking vacations to Malibu and wherever else they decided to spend their money. Katsuki couldn't help but scoff. He wasn't even surprised. And they say that heroes are supposed to be at the top of society.
"Screw that shit," he muttered, licking the melting treat absentmindedly. Eri and Kota stopped their playful squabbling to look up at him with confused expressions.
"Screw what shit?" Kota said. He examined Katsuki's face and then groaned. "Heroes again?"
Katsuki shrugged and pulled his hoodie higher, tucking the long strands back. God, he needed a haircut. And his wings needed trimming as well. "It's not my fault they're so pathetic."
"Well if they're pathetic then stop thinking about 'em," Kota mused as he gave Eri the rest of his popsicle. She snatched it away and devoured it in one bite, licking whatever was left off the stick.
"He's right, Suki. You think about heroes allllll the time. And you said that thinking about worthless crap just gives you stress you don't need."
The ash blonde chuckled. "I did say that. But heroes are not just something I can push to the side. We could get into trouble if we get tangled up with them."
They hummed and turned to the busy street, whispering about the shops that they noticed and the people they saw. Katsuki tuned into their conversation, listening to them argue about how the dark maroon curtains on the inside of one of the shop windows were better than the teal ones in another, and vice-versa. Suddenly, he felt a body crash into his, pushing the frozen treat that he held onto his shirt, staining it yellow. He frowned, and glanced at his siblings, watching as they slowly hid behind his legs, gawking at whatever asshat decided not to use their eyes.
Katsuki looked up sharply. Before him stood a woman around his age, with dark black hair in a ponytail and equally dark eyes to match. She apologized profusely, pulling napkins out her purse.
"O-oh, I'm so sorry sir, I wasn't looking where I was going!"
Katsuki didn't feel like fighting, it was hot and he had his siblings with him on a crowded sidewalk, so he just gently shoved her away and zipped up his sweater, covering the sticky stain on his shirt.
"It's fine. Just look where you're going next time."
She apologized once again before trailing her eyes down to the children huddling behind his legs. Katsuki growled and tried to walk away quickly, to not cause an even bigger scene, but she held his arm in an iron grip, suspicion flashing across her face.
"Are these children yours?"
Katsuki would have said no, but he had a feeling that that would just stir up more trouble so he responded with an annoyed, "Something like that. Now let go, we have somewhere to be."
