I hurriedly walked towards the entrance of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. I was supposed to meet Tiana and Kheumani here an hour ago. They were gonna tear me a new one, but it's not entirely my fault. I was held up by my boyfriend, Tyler...well ex-boyfriend now, I thought bitterly.
Despite him knowing how important today was for me, he made it all about himself, again.
I quickly head into the TSA line, shooting Tiana and Kheumani a text, apologizing profusely.
I take off my beige puffer jacket and Converse and walk through the scanner.
This morning, I was full of excitement and happiness and now.. I don't know how to feel. My three-year relationship ended today yet I couldn't find it in myself to be sad, more pissed if anything. Honestly, I had checked out of that relationship a long time ago. Tyler was a good boyfriend at first, but then I began to notice small ways he tried to chip at my self-esteem. From criticizing my weight gain to how I did my hair and even how the tone of my breathing irritated him. Today was my final straw. He knew how much I wanted to study abroad in France with my best friends, I'd been telling him about it for years.
But this morning, he decided to give me his two cents about how the 4,000-mile distance would ruin our relationship and he "advised".. well more like told me not to go. Can you believe him? He TOLD me a 19-year-old woman not to study abroad like he worked tirelessly over the summer to pay the expenses. I couldn't help but laugh in his face and tell him that we were over.
I scanned the gate looking for my bestfriends until I saw them on their laptops, typing away furiously. That explains why they didn't answer my texts, at least they weren't mad at me. Kheumani glances up at my approaching figure and frowns slightly. Uh-oh. My heart sunk. I hope they're not mad at me. That would officially ruin my day. I walk up slowly with a nervous smile on my face.
"Hey-" I start. I'm cut off by Tiana, who tries not to yell at me.
"Seriously? Where were you? We were waiting outside for a whole hour!" she whisper-yelled.
Kheumani just shook her head and added, "That wasn't cool. You couldn't even call us? We were worried."
I sighed and sat down in the seat in front of them.
"I'm single as of today." I quietly said.
They both gasped.
"What?" Tiana questioned.
"Are you okay?" Kheumani added.
"Yea... Tyler was doing too much this morning and I decided I had had enough." I said.
I hadn't looked up from my nails since I sat down. It was silent for a beat before I decided to look up to see their faces.
Kheumani was smiling and Tiana looked murderous.
"Why are smiling?" I asked Kheumani.
"Because babe. You're finally free from that sorry excuse of a man," she said. I sniffled as tears filled my eyes.
She and Tiana had been warning me against Tyler since the first time they walked in on him screaming at me at a Halloween party. He thought our matching Mean Girls' Santa costumes were too risque and was berating me about being a whore.
"When I get my hands on him," Tiana muttered.
She had a special vendetta against Tyler; she didn't like how he rose his voice at me. It reminded her of her cousin's past relationship, which almost cost her her life.
"Tiana, don't worry. He won't be bothering me ever again. We're over." I reassured her.
"Oh, I know," she said with a smirk growing on her face, "I got something for him when we get back."
I laughed.
"What were y'all typing up before I came over?"
They told me about a paid internship they found at a modeling agency in Paris and sent me the application.
"They have some cute eye candy," I muttered.
Tiana and Kheumani started chuckling.
"What?" I asked, "Just cause I just got out of a relationship doesn't mean that I can't admire the cute French guys."
We laughed together as we scrolled through the agency's page.
