School went ok that day... But I still missed Elena. Elena and I had done EVERYTHING together for years! But now Elena and I almost never got to see each other, except on face time, and the occasional weekend visit.
When my mom told me that Elena had lost her hearing, I didn't understand. (this was 7 months ago)
Then my mom went on.
"Her parents don't know if it's temporary or permanent..."
Her mom looked at her stepdad uneasily "and we don't know what this means for your friendship with Elena. you might not be able to see her as often, and probably won't be going to your school anymore." And that's when I realized she was serious.
As soon as those words came out of her mouth, I bolted to my room, where my phone was charging, and dialed Elena's number. But instead of Elena, Elena's father picked up.
"Hello?" Disappointment surged through her. She'd been hoping for Elena. Then she realized, if her mom was telling the truth, that would've been a ridiculous idea. How would Elena have heard her? This was going to take a lot of getting used to.
"Hello Mr. Grace, this is Katelyn. I um... Heard the news about Elena, is she ok?" Elena's dad hesitated before replying,
"It's going to be hard, katelyn, for all of us. Elenas mother and I aren't quite sure what to do about this..." He admitted. "This is going to take a lot of time, to adjust. And Elena is going to need a lot of support, but will probably be very busy, with speech therapy and learning sign language."
" I know that Mr. Grace, I just want to know what I can do to help,"
"We all do..."
.
But that was 7 months ago. I couldn't be dwelling on the past. Since that day, i had spent most of my free time learning sign language and face timing with Elena. If anyone needed a friend right now, it was Elena.
