"You got what?"
Ramona couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"I'm not repeating myself," he said, sourly, in an obviously bitter mood that her questioning was not going to improve, but she couldn't help it.
"How-what happened?" she asked him, "I thought you and your boss got along fine," Ramona knew that her dad had been working with this guy for a few years, and he was good at his job, even though she knew that and she hardly ever saw him do anything pertaining to it at the apartment. "And don't tell me, 'it's a Monday'."
"You're gonna have to shut up, for like two seconds, ok?" Dad pinched the bridge of his nose, much like how Ramona had this morning. "You're driving me nuts here."
"Well, than give me something!" Ramona followed him into the small outlet mini mart, "What led up to it?"
He was silent, almost thoughtful, before sighing as he came up to the counter. "I called a bitch, a bitch."
Ramona blinked, confused. "What? Like, a client?"
Her dad half-nodded, probably realizing how bad that sounded, grumbling at having to answer any of my questions.
Ramona didn't say anything for a while, as we both waited for the cashier to come from around the back. "I mean," she started, a question in her tone. "Were they?"
He looked at her, "Yeah, she was. Is," he frowned, just thinking about her. "Doesn't even know her own goddamn house. Had to start over because of that shit."
Ramona thought to herself, head tilting to process the new information. "Ok, well, maybe not a bitch," Ramona began, Dad gave a betrayed look that turned his whole face completely disgruntled and Ramona quickly continued. "She definitely wasted your time and was insensitive about it, which is a dick move," Ramona rubbed the back of her neck. "Ok, maybe a little bit of a bitch, but I wouldn't have said it out loud," humming with laughter, taunting her father with a side nudge.
Johnny shook his head, a crack of a smile forming on his face, probably pleased to hear that she was on his side in this scenario. "You're the only reasonable person in my life right now, kiddo," he put a hand to the top of her head, this time with a light tousle of her hair as he fondly smiled.
"Yeah, I am," Ramona nodded, knowing full well, and with a proud smile, that she was.
A few moments later, Johnny was leaning down to look at the pizza slices in the food heater on the counter. "That one," he pointed at the back, the biggest slice, the cashier grabbing it with his bare hand after opening the heater. Ramona made a face, disgusted at the act and sighed, knowing that she wouldn't be eating anything not prepacked from here again. "Aren't you gonna wear gloves?"
"At least?" the girl cringed.
He made no other sound as he just stared at the two of them, someone opened the door to the shop and greets the cashier with a few words of Spanish, Dad gives an exasperated sigh before pointing to the oven. "Your turn, Ray, pick one," he nudged her, before looking back at the cashier. "But, find some damn gloves for the kid, man."
