I thought I heard something outside. It was a Sunday morning. I live in a small town in which mostly about half of the town goes to church, work, vacation or some place that isn't home. Everyone stays out until late. And once again my, not-so-smart twin 16 year old brother, Kevin, played his stupid game of, "Oh, no I put the thermometer by a lamp and suffocated myself in my room!! I'm too sick to do anything at all! Melanie shall do everything for me!" I swear he is so dramatic! Since Kevin is the oldest. By, like two minutes, he always gets what he wants while Jessica is getting hangovers and wasted by different men and women each night, behind Uncle Daren's back. Yes, women too. We don't really ever see her around the house often... Like ever.
I swear this women goes through men like underwear and never wears them twice or washes them. Just leaves them laying there on the floor. While Daren's always out working to take care of us and makes sure that we're in school and are fed.
Kevin and I had it hard growing up. Once we were born, mom finally settled down and got married to our father a few years later. He changed her into a total different person. Only for him to die in a car accident with me present. Mom broke down worse than before. Now she's back to her old self, but way more uncaring than usual.
She would beat me other than Kevin mostly because she thought it was my fault that my father died. Apparently I should have been able to pull dad out of the car. Even though I tried, his leg was crushed between the wheel and the top of the car. He told me to tell mom he loved her with all his heart and for Kevin and I to stay close together and take care of each other. He loved us all. He was what made us a family. My father then pushed me away from the car and told me to run and not to look back. No matter what.
I was only eight at the time. Flustered in confusion, fear and sadness. I ran. Once I was about a couple of feet away. I then heard the sound of an explosion and I was thrown into the air. My head was smacked onto the concrete. I heard a pop, cracking sound accompanied with the sudden flush of plain going through my left leg and collarbone. As my vision began to blur I twisted around, ignoring the pain to have one last look at my father, even though he told me not to, I didn't care. Only to see the car had bursted into flames. I tried to hold back the tears but the heat forced them to come. My eyes started to sting from all of the smoke.
I called out to my father.
"Daddy!!"
I waited for him to answer even though deep inside i knew he was gone and never is to return.
The physical pain didn't exist anymore and I still continued to call out.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!"
Still no answer.
Clouds started to invade my eyes as I heard the sound of sirens growing closer. The pain came back suddenly as a shark would for its prey. I moaned in fear and agonizing pain as the clouds got darker and darker until I couldn't see anything. I heard a sound of some what of a rattle coming towards me. My body was stiff and I couldn't move any if my limbs. I desperately moved my eyes around for it was the only thing I could move not caring about the stinging pain.
There were men's voices ringing in my hears followed by footsteps.
"Over here!"
I felt a cold touch on my neck.
"She's still alive!!"
The rattling noise got louder quicker and i then feel multiple hands carefully lifting me up. My head and back lie on something soft.
I felt my eyelids grow heavy and close shut.
I woke up in a different room with white curtains. I had a splitting head ache. There were tubes and vines and needles poked inside me everywhere. I felt my head and found a bandage wrapped around it. I looked down to see my left arm in a cast. My eyes traveled down to my leg which was also in a cast and was propped up in a sling. The headache started to slowly go away after time passed and my memory became clear of what just previously happened.
The curtain opens revealing Kevin on the other side. He stopped and planted himself in the spot. We both stared at each other over excited to see each other. He was trying not to cry but once I started to cry he let the drops fall down his face and ran to me to put me in his familiar, warm embrace. He hugged me lightly and cautiously, worried and concerned of my pain. After about what felt like hours of silence just in each others arms, Kevin pulled away from me and wiped my tears away.
"Melanie, it's going to be okay. You're safe. I'm here. I'm never leaving you."
He smiled and hugged me again. I smiled and squeezed him closer to me for comfort and warmth.
