A couple of days pass as I settle into a rotation of balancing being a student and patrolling for demonic threats. The experience is not unlike someone repeatedly throwing me off a tall tower into a freezing cold ocean.

Patrolling late into the night and waking up early to go to school is twice as hard as explaining the grass stains and blood in my clothes. Luckily, Alan is running interference.

Alan has been covering for me in my late-night patrols. I refrain from asking how on the grounds it is none of my business, and I never want to know.

Mr. Glazner's decision to have class outside is a blessing. The only drawback is we must distance ourselves from other students and read continuously for the entire hour.

My descent into the world of Ms. Celie and Suge Avery is a welcome distraction. The shade of the maple tree provides the precise calming effect to allow me to drift.

The movie replays in my head. I have watched the movie over a hundred times. The overall theme of the book and spirit of the movie are so enthralling and never become stale to me. It is the first story in a while where every character felt compelling to me.

The movie is interrupted when I feel a coolness run down my spine. A chalky taste enters my mouth as a pair of expensive Italian leather shoes stop in front of me. My eyes track up the Lucas' body until they meet his eyes.

"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." Lucas says. "Of course, God isn't real."

"That is a bold statement." I say.

"Is it?" Lucas asks. "Shouldn't you be saving a cat from a tree or telling one of your other friends' relatives how good of friends you are?"

"So, I take it you're not here to apologize."

Lucas ignores the question as he leans on the tree. "You strike me more as a Pride and Prejudice kind of guy. The Color Purple seems too on-the-nose for you."

I close the book as I stare at him. "Further evidence you know absolutely nothing about me."

"So, you don't identify, in the slightest, with Elizabeth? Willful, stubborn, and kind of hot?" Lucas asks.

His compliment comes out of nowhere and thoroughly confuses me. The cold feeling is slowly being replaced with a white-hot feeling spreading through my cheeks.

Lucas smiles as he leaves me in shock once again. It is my understanding that he finds enjoyment in doing so.

The bell rings in the distance as Mr. Glazner announces class has concluded, informing us he would like a one-page essay on the novel we chose and why we chose it.

Charlotte quickly finds me and we head towards the cafeteria. She grills me on my interaction with Lucas. I debate telling her the entire story. I concede, knowing she will eventually pull the information out of me.

As we arrive to find Eva sitting at a yellow circular cafeteria table, Charlotte gushes about Lucas' interest in me. I do not share her enthusiasm. Eva is quiet, watching in silence.

Charlotte and I recognize the tell-tale sign of Eva having prior knowledge of something before we do. Charlotte slides over beside Eva and I take a seat in front of them.

"You knew!" Charlotte says. "Why didn't you tell me so we could hook them up!"

"I wasn't supposed to know. I overheard Finn and Lucas arguing about Perry." Eva says. "He does seem to like you."
