Perry
Alan and Penny take turns trying to interrogating me about the events of the festival before Penny and Porter shuttle me home. Alan stays to investigate the scene of the crime.
Penny makes one last attempt to extract the truth from me on the way home. Porter presumably feels my irritation before cutting in with a joke about it not being a coincidence I am the one to shut down the festivities. His joke falls flat, but serves to stop the conversation.
The silence lasts until we enter the house, as if someone could hear us in the car or the drive on the way to house. Penny's phone rings as we enter the house and Alan immediately orders I tell him everything. Penny cuts in, saying it has been a long night. The two agree, reluctantly, I should get some rest before reliving the trauma of the night.
I do not bother saying goodnight as I retreat upstairs. A quick shower reveals a bruise on my right leg and a cut on my left shoulder, from pushing myself against the log in the woods. I clean the wound with alcohol before heading dressing for bed and heading back to my room.
"I'm way too comfortable with dressing wounds." I say to myself.
"A little." David says.
I am startled when I notice the window is open. My eyes survey the room for the large guy the voice belongs to. He slowly walks from the closet with a small wave. I quickly shut the door behind me before I turn back to him.
"Sorry, the window was open." David says.
"We both know I live on the second floor and I'm very paranoid. My window wasn't open."
"It...is now." David says.
"We don't have a trellis or anything. It must have been on Hell of a climb." I say. "What are you doing up here?"
"I wanted to check on you. I didn't respond how I should have back at the festival. I was in shock." David says. "You're a superhero. I dig it, Ceilo."
"You're not mad?" I ask.
"We all have secrets. You did what you had to do."
"That's true but it's not a secret I wanted to keep. If you hadn't seen the Nora's scene in the woods, it would probably be harder to believe." I say.
"So, you've seen that before? In the woods?" David asks. "I've never seen a guidance counselor kill anyone. You seemed just as shocked."
"You saw that? It's the first time I didn't save someone. I've seen dead bodies before, but I usually save the live ones." I say.
"There wasn't much you could do. You did what you could."
"Did I? She caught me off guard and my powers are wonky. She shouldn't have been able to catch me off guard. I should be able to do more now."
David walks forward and clutches my shoulders with his hands. "You saved most of us. If I were in the woods at night alone, I could have died."
"Why would you be in the woods at night?" I ask.
"Why were the others?" David asks.
David's avoidance of my subtle inquiry raises a question of if he is a supernatural creature into my head. All signs point to 'yes' and his avoidance of my inquiry is creating a distrust between us.
"David, I've been through a lot lately with keeping this secret and secrets in general. I can't go back to that. And I have to be honest, I am really falling for you. It's—"
"Scary? Yeah, ditto." David says. "I know lately I've sent you mixed signals, but I feel the same way you do."
"I doubt it."
"You're right, I probably care a lot more." David says. "Whether you believe it or not, I care deeply about you. I have for a long time and it scared me. And then tonight, when we talked, I realized I lo—"
I am melting as David talks. His words are what I wanted him to say for quite a while. Seconds before my heart bursts, Alan knocks at my door.
I had not heard him come home.
My entire being is sent into a panic. Alan is not aware I am seeing David at all. The last time Alan found David and I alone in my room, we were messing around. He never let David and I be alone in my room again after that encounter.
Rather than seeing Alan arrest or murder David, I tell David to hide in the closet again. Alan knocks again as David disappears. I cross the room and open the door to find a curious Alan.
"What's going on in here? You never lock the door." Alan says.
"You're very distrustful, you know?"
"Maybe. Listen, there's been another incident. I was going to ask if you want to go with me, but you're clearly tired, so, I'll go alone." Alan says. "You're okay, right?"
"Define okay."
"We need to talk, Per. Me and your mother are worried about you. I know the family is in shambles, and it's mostly my fault, but we'll fix it." Alan says.
"Dad..."
"Get some sleep. We've got a lot of work to do in the morning." Alan says as he leaves.
Alan's words reverberate off the walls in my mind. The world as I know it has become unrecognizable. While it does concern me there has been an incident, it has been a long night and I am still not done.
I close and lock the door as I turn to find David staring at me. In the shock of seeing him, I forget I am only wearing a graphic t-shirt and a pair of boxer-briefs. The way he is staring at me reminds me how undressed I really am.
David recovers quickly. "What do you think happened?" He asks.
"That's what you want to talk about?" I ask.
David chuckles at me. "If I'm honest, I don't want to talk at all. But your dad could lock me away."
"You're the mayor's son. I doubt you'd stay in very long."
"You think? Papa would let me rot to teach me a lesson." David says. "It might be worth it, but you need some rest. I should get home before mama sends your dad to find me."
"You sure? I mean, I'm tired, but if you want to talk, I'm here. I feel like there's more that you need to say."
"There is, and I will. But another time. I'll call you tomorrow?" David ask.
"I'll answer."
David nods as he heads to the window. A force inside me pushes me across the room as he opens the window. I grab onto his large arms as he raises the window. He turns to me as I reach out and grab his face, pulling him close until our lips meet.
The kiss feels more intense than any kiss we have shared before. The kiss is smoldering, like his skin. This time, I can feel every emotion he is feeling, including his utter terror.
David is the first to pull away. He stares at me before shaking his head. The gentle giant slips out of the window, dropping to the ground. I watch in shock as he gracefully balances on his feet before he takes off jogging down the street.
"Yup, he's definitely a werewolf."
