Sheriff Alan acted quickly upon receiving a text from me. The police reacted quickly, most having already been at the festival, and canvassed the woods in search of the animal that caused the deaths of Alyssa Barnes and Elliot Nam.
Mayor Gilbert announced the closing of the festival as we returned. We were taken to an area enclosed by EMS vehicles. After we have been thoroughly checked out, we are left with each other.
The group has been quiet since we left the clearing. Most of them are still in shock. I can feel the distinct absence of emotion exuding from them, telling me they are in falling deeper into their shock. It spurs me to address their shock the best way I can.
"I couldn't tell you." I confess. "I don't really know what all of it means yet and what I do know, it's not something one brings up in normal conversation."
"You created fire from thin air and tossed our guidance counselor into the forest." Charlotte says. "Exactly what are you?"
A moment passes before I explain what I am, in my own terms. As I explain to them, I realize I know little about what it truly means to be a Zion. The group is stuck in disbelief as they process what I am saying.
Eva and the vampires are the only ones who are not perplexed by my admission. The thought never crossed my mind the vampires told her everything, but it is crystal clear she knows something.
Charlotte stares at Eva. "Why don't you look completely floored by this?" she asks.
"I knew about vampires because Finn and Lucas are vampires." Eva says. "I couldn't tell anyone because it wasn't my secret. And people tend to think the worse when you tell them you're dating a vampire."
"Sounds familiar, but at the risk of being a hypocrite, you kept that secret for you." I speak. "I kept my secret to make sure you guys were safe and not pulled into whatever shenanigans I wander into. You kept the secret to make people think your boyfriend and his brother aren't monsters."
"That's easy for you to say, but you have never given them a chance!" Eva argues.
"Eva, they're vampires! It isn't like they have a religious difference that we should all respect. They're dead! How old are they?" Jason asks.
"It's not your choice or your business! You need to get your life together and stop worrying about other people's lives." Eva says.
Eva and Jason descend into arguing before Finn attempts to interject. A feeling of intense confusion mixed with pain sinks into me. Charlotte and Nate are overwhelming me with their feelings.
"Now you know why I've been disappearing, and why I'm so distant. My entire life changed, and I wanted to share it with everyone, but it's dangerous." I say. "Alan convinced me to hide it from everyone, including my mother. It wasn't personal."
"How could it not be? We've been friends forever, and you didn't come to us at all, even when we told you we knew something was up." Charlotte says.
"It's better than banging a vampire." Nate says.
"You're not banging the right vampire, Nate." Lucas jokes.
"Banging any vampire is a bad idea." Charlotte says. "This explains so much."
"So, when I found you in the woods, you were going after them?" David asks. "I'm relieved. I thought that was about me."
I smile at him as Porter appears between two EMS vehicles. He greets the rest of the group before telling me Alan wants me at home. The others protest they have more questions. I promise to fill them in on everything later, to Porter's dismay. He rushes me to Alan, Penny and Patricia, who are waiting for me at the car.
With one last look, I climb into the SUV. It occurs to me that I might have just screwed up everything.
