The next morning, true to their words, my parents interrogated me with the help of Porter. I was honest about everything I felt they should know. I left out particulars, including my relationship with that maybe-werewolf, and my parents did not press further.

Alan hesitantly tells me about the incident from the night before. Principal Madrigal was murdered in his office last night. Elnora's fingerprints, or lack thereof, are all over his death.

Porter is skeptical throughout the conversation. He offers to drive me to school. I shoot David a text that Porter is bringing me to school. He is slow to respond, letting me know he is either busy or unhappy with my text.

Porter, unlike my parents, is cautious about questioning me, opting to extract information out of me with as much finesse as possible. His subtle prodding of who I texted this morning hits too close to home.

Luckily, he drives like a lunatic and we arrive at school in no time. Eva meets me at the curb as Porter drives away. The two of us do not speak as we walk to the building. The silence between us lasts until we arrive at her locker.

"So, how mad are you?" Eva asks. "Zion-level? Or slaying me-level?"

I laugh at her joke. "I lied, too. As much as I wish I could ask 'how you could do such a thing,' I get it." I say. "However, I do have to warn you about Finn and Lucas."

"Finn is a good person. Lucas, well, he's not as bad as you're making him out to be." Eva says.

"Yeah, I got that feeling when the two of them attacked me in the locker room." I say. "Don't worry. I won."

"Against two vampires? You really are different, aren't you? You've been dealing with this all alone?" Eva asks.

"I had Alan."

"Had? Do you know how much sadness is in your voice? It's kind of heartbreaking." Eva says.

"Okay, Ev, can we postpone the psychoanalysis? I've got a lot going on and breaking now isn't ideal." I say.

Eva nods. "So, the twins are right? You're in danger?" She asks.

"Kinda. Not just me. We're all in trouble if we don't find out what Nora wants and keep her from it." I say. "She hasn't been very low-key about her murderous spree. I should have known from the moment I met her. My Zion-sense definitely tingled, and not in the good way."

"I can't tell if you're joking." Eva says. "If not, that is so cool! I want to know everything."

Eva and I decide to make a quick trip to the courtyard. We discuss what I know about my powers, including reading people's emotions and moving objects with my mind. Eva is amazed as we head towards the senior square.

A strange feeling vibrates through my body, almost like a wave of emotions. A rush of anger follows the feeling. My mind opens to everything around me as a huge figure rushes towards me. The figure slams into me and I crash into a row of lockers.

Eva screams out as Zachary moves forward. My mind flies all over the room as Eva attempts to push him away. Zachary shoves her as he reaches for me.

Zachary cocks his fist back to hit me. "You son of a—"

Zachary's fist flies forward towards my face. My mind is still boggled as Zachary's fist approaches. As his fist is about to hit my face, a pale hand grabs his fist.

Lucas squeezes Zachary's fist in his hand, shoving it back to him. "You don't want to do that, Sparky. Take a hike."

Zachary cradles his fist as his eyes burn a hole through me. "My sister was murdered while she was in the woods with you and your freaky friends! You're going to pay for this." He rages.

"Not today." Lucas says. "Buh-bye."

Zachary snarls at him as he storms off in the opposite direction. Eva walks over and checks me out. I am stunned by the entire event. Lucas smirks at me, and the gratitude I feel for him is undercut by my disdain for his nature.

"You can thank me now." Lucas says.

"Mind your own business, Lucas. I could have handled him." I say.

"Perry!" Eva warns.

"With your face? What kind of Zion are you anyways?" Lucas asks. "When you're ready to say it, you're welcome."

I watch as Lucas leaves us standing in the hallway. The other students have been watching with interest. Eva barks for them to mind their business as the bell rings. Eva and I head off to class without speaking.

As we near class, Eva stops me. She seems perturbed as she addresses me. "Why'd you do that to Lucah? He's trying to help."

"Who in the Hell is Lucah? Is that his real name?" I ask.

"Not the point, Perry! They're trying to help you, especially against Nora." Eva says.

"And why would they do that, E? How do they even know Nora?" I ask.

Eva swears under her breath. Her eyes dart back and forth, as if she is trying to decide whether to say something or not.

"Because Nora is their sister!" She blurts.

"Wait, Nora is their sister?! And you want me to believe they have nothing to do with their sister?" I ask. "Eva, a girl just died! She literally ripped a girl's throat out. They're all dangerous."

"Who's dangerous?" Charlotte asks.

Charlotte and Nate appear in front of us. Eva stammers Nora's name before I explain what we were discussing. Charlotte and Nate are confused, with Nate looking especially disturbed by the announcement.

Luckily, the bell rings before another word can be said. The four of us decide to discuss it after class as we head to class. Charlotte adds there is a lot to discuss.

Our friendship is clearly not okay.
