Perry
My mood has been consistently diving since first period. The overwhelming desire to leave school entirely has been slowly pushing me towards the door for hours.
Eva and Charlotte do their best to pull me back into the real world with little success. The moment I sit down for lunch, the two girls attempt to cheer me up with new news about the festival.
I pretend to listen, nodding every five seconds, until Charlotte asks if I am listening. The thoughts in my mind have been swallowing me continuously like a wave. The worry and anxiety becomes realer with every thought.
Rather than lie to them, I excuse myself from the table and bolt from the cafeteria.
The hallways are empty as I head towards the bathroom. My mind cannot catch up with itself. I enter the bathroom just as my breathing slows. My chest restricts as my vision becomes blurred. I slide into a stall and onto the toilet seat as the world begins to darken.
The reaction my body is having is new to me. It feels like my body is completely shutting down. A complete silence voids all sound around me as the world fades.
An eternity passes before the stall door closes. Sound is the first of my senses to return. The sensation of someone standing in front of me causes me to realize my head has sunk into my hands with both idling between my knees.
David kneels in front of me. His lips move quickly but I cannot make sense of what he is saying. His words begin to make sense after a couple of seconds.
"Perry? Are you okay?" David asks. "What can I do?"
Cold sweat is drying on my skin as my lungs are finally able to take in all the air they need. David tells me to stay where I am as he exits the stall.
I can hear a bag unzipping before David uses the sink. He enters the stall again, locking it behind him. He leans my head back as he presses a cold towel against my forehead.
David's commands do not bristle me as they usually do. My body is too weak to fight him, but something about him being caring with me is attractive.
Neither of us speaks for quite some time as he sits on the bathroom floor, watching me. The door opens and closes multiple times before we are alone again.
"Thank you." I croak.
David smiles at me. "No problem, Cielito." He says.
My cheeks burn as stare up at the ceiling. "Straight guys don't say that to other guys."
David laughs as he stands. "I'll add it to the list. Are you going to be alright?" He asks.
A pang hits my heart. "Yeah, you can go if you want. I'll be fine." I say.
David laughs. "I'm not leaving you like this. I was asking if you're good to come with me. What do you say? Let's ditch this place." He speaks.
I lean my head down to face him. "I'm not ditching school...with you."
"Ouch." He says. "If I didn't already know you were surly, I'd take offense to that. Come on, stop being a pain in the culo!"
David extends his hand to me. I examine his hand closely, trying to decide if I should ditch school to disappear with a guy who ignored me all summer. My parents are screaming in my head for me to make the right decision. David, however, is not screaming at all. He is waiting patiently.
With resignation, I cave to his request. Removing the towel, I take his hand. He pulls me up to a wobbly stance. My equilibrium catches up with me quickly as he opens the stall. We step out into the bathroom to find two students staring at us with bewildered expressions.
"Ocupate de tus asuntos!" David snarls.
The students disperse into different stalls as I chuckle to him. David takes the towel and tosses it into his gym bag before opening the door for me.
The hesitation of a good student only lasts for a few seconds before I oblige the jock. Against my better judgment and the voices of my many of my loved ones, I decide to see where this takes me.
It is not like the day has been a stunning success in the first place.
"After you."
I nod as I head out of the door. "Do not look at my ass." I say.
"You're the boss, as always." David laughs.
