Nate continuously extols the virtue of a mystery woman he has yet to reveal. He describes her in painful detail without giving any identifiable information. We are thankful when we run into Parker and David, who inherit his moony ramblings.
Charlotte and Eva leave me to go to cheerleading practice while I head to my next class. The five minutes of quiet is welcome.
Unfortunately, it is interrupted by the youngest Putnam. Jason is in rare form once again. I round the corner, headed to towards the athletic wing when I happen upon Jason arguing with the twins.
Jason's rage is met differently between the twins. Finn tries to calm him while Lucas finds him amusing, or smirks at him while he rages. It only serves to make Jason angrier.
My first instinct is to run between them, but I recall the last time I stepped in to help him. I lean against the wall, watching as Finn fails to de-escalate the situation.
Jason is an underclassman, but there is something endearing about his brand of chaos. His protectiveness over Eva makes me see him in a different light. He has always been the dorky kid brother, but something about him has changed.
Chaos nearly erupts as Lucas warns him to leave them alone. Jason takes this as an invitation to shove him.
To my surprise, Lucas steps in front of Jason, looking him in the eye. He begins to speak softly and Jason sways, enthralled by him.
The twins have aroused my suspicions on more than a few occasions. My powers have been warning me to be cautious since the day I laid eyes on them, but since my powers have begun to emerge, I can feel the iciness of the brothers. Their ice-cold skin was enough to suggest vampire. Until now, I never had proof.
My voice meets the three men before I arrive as I call out to them. Jason snaps out of his daze as I walk up beside him and put my hand on his shoulder. His confusion is evident as Lucas stammers out an explanation. Finn apologizes as he pulls Lucas away.
"There's something weird about them. I don't like them being around Eva or you." Jason says.
"Clearly." I say. "You need to stay away from them, Jay. I mean it. Rage at whoever else you want, but they are off limits."
"Tell that to Eva." Jason says. "And yourself."
"Me? Why do you keep throwing me into this?" I ask.
"I heard them talking about you when I came to confront them. They were comparing you to Eva." Jason says.
"I'm sure I lost that comparison."
"Hardly with the way he was talking about you. I think you're underestimating yourself." Jason says. "I'm starting to think you're really looking out for me, not just for my sister."
"You know, Eva always says Putnam men are hard-headed and I never believed it, but you are living, breathing proof." I say.
Jason laughs as I offer to buy him a personal pizza from the cafeteria. Jason declines, stating that he has an appointment. Every bit of my being warns me not to ask him what he is going to get into as he sulks away.
Besides, I have two vampires to find.
