Perry
The class proceeds much like it usually does, with the added news of Principal Madrigal passing away. The details of his death are kept secret, with the emphasis put on talking through our grief with our newest psychotic guidance counselor.
By the end of class, I am deeply troubled by the idea of Nora being anywhere near any of the students. Mr. Glazener addresses Alyssa Barnes and Elliot Nam, which only serves to make the air in the classroom sadder.
The emotions are oozing from each student, washing together. The emotions flow through me, evoking my own sadness. The feelings are too much as I watch the hair on the back of Berry Gorman's neck stand on edge.
Thunder rumbles outside as I find the sky outside has darkened. The world outside of the window is washed away by a torrential downpour.
I raise my hand, asking to be excused. All but running, I exit the room and find myself in the hallway. My journey leads me towards the bathroom, but I do not make it as the feelings overwhelm me. I press myself against the wall, trying find my breath.
My stomach lurches as I bend forward. A sob escapes my lips as I try to shut the emotions out. The chaos inside my mind is shattered by whispers.
My head tilts up as I find Porter standing in front of me. His eyes are closed and his lips move quickly as the feelings begin to drain from me. As the air returns to my lungs, he finishes the incantation and opens his eyes. His eyes glimmer before returning to their almond hue.
"What happened?" Porter asks.
Nate moves beside me, confirming we are not alone. He looks between Porter and me. "Glazener was talking about Madrigal, then he started talking about Alyssa and Elliot. Perry ran out and I found him here. What in Hell is going on?"
"I did it." I say breathlessly. "I created the rain."
"The monsoon, you mean?" Porter asks. "Little bro, are you okay? You look like Hell."
"I felt all of it. The sadness and the pain. It was too much." I say. "I can't handle it."
"You caused the storm? Because you felt sad?" Nate asks.
"Because he channeled all the sadness in that room. He doesn't have control over it, clearly." Porter says. "Nate, we need to keep this between us, okay? Our powers have to be a secret."
A spark of anger rises in Nate. The anger sends a shockwave through my mind. Porter, sensing what is happening, asks Nate to leave. Nate reluctantly leaves us alone in the hallway.
"Be nicer to him." I say. "It's not his secret. He shouldn't have to keep it."
"Okay, look, I'm being supportive here, but you've got to accept some hard truths. Not everyone can be trusted, even people you love." Porter says. "If your friends are going to know about this, they're taking on your secret."
"What're you even doing here? You do know that when you leave high school, you leave high school, right?" I ask.
"I'll be sure to remember that. Are you better now? No tornadoes left in you?" Porter jokes.
The sound of heels against the marble floor are not the first sign of Elnora. The cold, dark feeling in the pit of my stomach arrives long before she does.
"I hope not. The wind is Hell on my hair." Elnora says.
All the energy that has not been zapped away pools in my body and I stand up straight. Elnora, dressed in a navy pantsuit with a pair of red bottoms, smiles like the cat that caught the canary. Her eyes appraise Porter for a moment before she finds her center.
"Perry, why didn't you tell me your brother was so...delicious-looking. I'd have found him first." Elnora says. "More delicious than the girl in the woods. Oops, I shouldn't say that too loud. Her big, burly brother might come back. He'd make an excellent minion."
"Stay away from him!" I say.
"Fine. Give me the dagger and I'll be on my merry little way." Elnora says.
"What dagger?" Porter and I ask simultaneously.
Elnora's eyes bounce between us before a she grins. "Okay, now that's just adorable. But you both know which dagger. It's the same dagger that if you don't give it to me, I'll start draining every member of your family and friends for it. Maybe even that hunky football player."
Porter stares over at me. "Please tell me she's just taunting you, and Dad is wrong." He says.
"Maybe not. Maybe I'll start with your juicy big brother. Maybe I'll turn him and make you watch." Elnora says.
Without warning, she is jerked off her feet and slammed into the lockers by an invisible force. She stands, her face filled with veins and her eyes black as coal. Porter stares in shock.
Elnora's snarls lightly. "I will tear your entire life to pieces until you give me what I want. I'll make the pathetic bimbo in the woods look like a mercy-killing compared to the Hell I will rain down on this podunk little town. And I'll make you watch every moment." She says.
"And how are you going to do that while you're bouncing off lockers?" Porter asks. "We're not afraid of you."
"Just wait." Elnora says as leaves us standing in the hallway.
"We're not afraid of her, right?" Porter asks.
"A little bit." I say. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
"We need our mommy and daddy? Yeah, I'm already in the car." Porter says.
"I'll get my bag." I say as I head back towards class.
