My head rests against my palm as I shift around in the uncomfortable chair beside my mom's bed. My eyes grow heavy as the sun begins to peak in through the glass windows, brightening up the room in contrast to the heavy dread illuminating the air.
Her heart monitor rings out a steady beat, and I've been counting each noise it makes to pass the time.
The door clicks open and her doctor enters, clipboard in hand. My dad rises to my feet, eager to hear from him, "Good morning, all the test results came back. MRIs show no signs of any fractures or hemorrhaging, but she does have a pretty nasty concussion. It seems she had quite the fall."
Every word he speaks takes a little weight off my chest, "Why hasn't she woken up yet?" I question.
"Well when she hit her head it did render her unconscious. We're gonna keep her monitored for a few days, but all her readings are normal, so she should be waking up within the next few hours. When she gets released you just have to keep an eye on her and help her out a bit, her thought process may be a bit delayed until her concussion heals." He explains, and my dad and I nod to show we understand.
With that, he exits the room. I sit back further into the chair, relaxing a bit.
Leave it to my mom to fall down the stairs getting a midnight snack.
"I'm gonna go get a coffee, you want anything?" I push myself up onto my feet, heading towards the door.
Dad shakes his head, "I'm okay.. don't be gone long, in case she wakes up."
I nod then step out into the hallway, making my way downstairs towards the vending machines. A yawn escapes my lips as I approach the coffee maker the staff set up.
My head snaps up as I hear my name being called in the distance. I spin around, seeing a worried looking Colby jogging towards me, "Colby?" I gasp as he latches onto me, giving me a tight hug. I pull back, squinting at him. "What are you doing here? You're gonna miss the flight!"
"I saw your text," he breathes, "Is she okay? Are you okay, what's going on?" His words are fast as he tries catching his breath.
"Baby you shouldn't be here-"
"I don't care about New Zealand I only wanted to go on the stupid trip if you were gonna be there," he cuts me off, "I'm staying here with you."
"Colby! Y-you can't do that you have to go!" I scold, "Please, you have to go now don't let me hold you back. I'm sorry, but I have to stay here with her."
"You're not holding me back-"
Tears fill my eyes and I practically force myself to speak, "Then go for me."
"Y/N, I can't be away from you for two months." He croaks, his eyes desperately searching my own.
I caress his cheek with my thumb, holding back a sob, "I'll be right here when you get back, okay?" I pull him back into me, wrapping my arms around his shoulders.
We stand, holding each other as long as we can until I step away, knowing he needs to leave, "You're gonna miss your flight. You have to go. I love you, Colby."
"Promise?" He whispers sadly.
"I promise. Now go."
