Y/N didn't know that Colby took the direct flight back to California after she did. She didn't know that the second she was truly gone, Colby couldn't let her go. That when they said their last goodbye, everything else in the world suddenly froze. The closer he got to her, the more he could feel his heart begin to beat again. She too could feel it in her own chest, but she didn't know why.
After a while the stars stopped reminding her of his freckles, and the hue of the ocean no longer matched his eyes to her. Although, everything had lost it's vibrancy since she stepped off that plane. The months melded into one big, hazed thought in her head.
But what she didn't know the most, is that he waited. He sat in the one place he felt closest to her. Every night. Hoping maybe one day, the space between them would close. He knew when she was close by the way his heart sped up, but never close enough to make it rest.
He saw her in everything. The sun could go fuck itself for all he cared, because his world revolved around her.
And as the L.A. lights reflected back at him from atop the old rooftop he sat upon, heart pounding, he still could not see the beauty before him.
That was, until he turned around.
There she was. Finally. Peaking at him through the warped window frame.
The breath he had been holding for months finally dispersed into the air, collapsing his lungs and all the tension they held.
She stepped out and sat beside him, and as her head touched his shoulder, all they could feel was bliss. For the first time in a long time, the air was fresh and brisk, and the world went quiet, the silence blanketing them with comfort.
"How'd you know I'd be here?" Colby asked as the sun began to awaken from its slumber, casting its soft orange glow across the old house they sat at with each other for the first time a year ago.
His eyes watched every word part from her lips, his eyes drowning with love for his Y/N.
"I had a feeling."
