Lori Kenning usually got the boys. She had the looks: naturally tanned skin, elegantly styled honey blonde princess curls that trailed down her back and ended at her butt, an enticing hourglass figure, makeup in all the places that needed it, etc. etc. She had a fun, bubbly personality, but she could be a complete bitch when she wanted to be. She had the best grades and never hesitated to help anyone that needed it. She was the prom queen in high school.

Who wasn't in love with her?

Despite Lori's cheerful and helpful exterior, she had been through a lot. It hardened her and gave her the impression that settling down was terrifying. That was why Lori never had a long-term relationship. She was afraid.

Then scientists made a groundbreaking discovery. It changed many things in Lori's world. As soon as she turned 20, people found out that the tiny fissures and cracks on the Earth's surface were caused by heartbreak.

Lori Kenning felt sorrow for the boys. She knew a lot of the cracks resulted from her failed relationships. It was her fault. That was when she decided to swear off of boys.

She knew they were staring at her. She knew they constantly dreamed about her being theirs. But she stood firm with her decision.

For two years, Lori was single. All the boys were devastated upon hearing about her swearing off dating. Lori didn't show it, but she shared their devastation. She had been alone for so long. Not just alone as in living alone, but alone as in lonely. No one to talk to. No shoulder to cry on when she needed it. No one to confess her undying love to.

Then she met Brendan. He was working at the McDonald's near her apartment building. Lori loved to go to that McDonald's when she felt like shit, and she knew most of the employees. So it came as a shock to be met with his beautiful green eyes when she ordered her food. She stood in her spot for a solid minute before she realized that she was probably drooling. Brendan gave her a goofy smile, and something flashed in his oh-so-beautiful eyes. It took Lori months before she finally realized what it was.

Lori Kenning was in love with that boy. She loved the annoying way he tapped her shoulder to get her attention. She loved the way his mouth was almost always curved into a smile. Not a smirk or a grin. Just a genuine smile. She loved the smell of his ebony-colored hair in the morning, like pine trees with a hint of mint. She loved how he would stretch his arms whenever he was tired, and somehow they would always end up around Lori. She loved how he said her name. His accent was slightly British, slightly New Yorker, like it couldn't decide on one, so it picked both.

She loved how they could ramble on about nonsense for hours. She loved how she could share all of her secrets with him. She loved how they used to cry together while listening to depressing pop music and just talk out their feelings. She loved how whenever she was having a BS day, he would list reasons that he loved her. She loved how she could confess her undying love for him, and he kissed her forehead and hugged her and said, "I love you too."

Notice how none of those sentences say "love." She loved Brendan.

Lori Kenning had never felt like she wanted to die over a boy before. She had everything she wanted. She had Brendan; why would she want to die and risk breaking his heart? Risk more ruptures in the Earth?

She found his texts, that's why. She discovered his texts with a bitch named Lyssa.

Most of them consisted of Lyssa saying, "u free 2nite?" Brendan usually responded with, "Hell ya."

She spent weeks, fuck, months crying about it. But she never told Brendan. She hoped that it would stop. But every night, Brendan would say he had to go somewhere. Every night, Lori would check his phone to see if her suspicions were true, and every night they were.

Then they got into a fight. Lori was crying, and Brendan was asking her what was wrong and acting like he cared, but Lori knew he didn't. That was just how it was with boys.

Their screaming and yelling escalated. Lori walked out. Brendan had the audacity to walk after her and ask her why she was leaving. She just spilled. She told him about everything.

Brendan was a stuttering mess. He tried telling her that Lyssa was just a friend, but it was all BS to Lori. She didn't want to listen to him.

She got in the car and drove away.

Lori Kenning hated the emptiness that came with pulling herself out of the boy's arms. She hated how everything meant nothing. Every word was a lie. Every touch was a wish.

She ignored the calls from boys asking her if she wanted to hook up with them later. Those boys could fuck off. The calls from Brendan were harder to ignore. He would call every night, and when he realized that she wasn't going to pick up, he started sending voicemails. Lori hated that she actually listened to them and found herself longing for Brendan all over again.

Lori Kenning's heart stopped when the boy's voicemails stopped coming. She knew she had a panic attack. She wanted to be over him, but after everything they shared, it couldn't be possible.

She spent the whole day cooped up in the guest room of her friend's house, searching for news related to Brendan.

Her friend found her sobbing in the room later, clutching the iPad in her hands.

Because Brendan was dead.

He had driven off a cliff. He had fallen into a canyon that was caused by heartbreak. People think it wasn't accidental.

Lyssa reached out to Lori. Lori was so numb she didn't even yell. She didn't feel anything. She just wanted it to be over. Everything to be over. She wanted to start again. She wanted her Brendan back.

The news Lyssa delivered was the final confirmation that the world wanted Lori gone.

Lyssa was helping Brendan choose out a fucking ring. For Lori. Like, he was going to propose.

Lori's body was found at the bottom of her canyon of heartbreak.
