Chapter 17

Alice's Point of View

I was floating, slowly, in a dark abyss. When I felt myself standing, I didn't feel like myself.

My body was aching, my throat burning, only not for blood. I was running from someone- or something. My vision was blurry, and cloudy.

There was an old man with me whispering he had to do something he never wanted to do to me. He was afraid for me, but I nodded my head as if I uderstood. He seemed dazzling, but three was no attraction between us.

"You are like family to me, Alice. I refuse to let the monster kill you before my very eyes. I'll only do this if you promise you'll get away, that you will forget your human life"

I watched him carefully. How was I going to forget my human life so easily? Even the treatments couldn't help me forget, thought I hid that from others.

"I'm going to wipe your memory clean of your tragic human life and of James. You'll only remember waking up as a vampire and then on. I can't let you live with pain." He said.

He whispered something and then lurched forward, biting my neck and I,screamed as he latest me on the ground.

I'm dying! I shouted in my head. The venom burned me, only I didn't have any burn marks. It was eating me alive, I swear.
"It'll be close." He whispered. "I have to find him and stop him from getting here in time. I cannot let him do this. I love you, Alice. You were the best family I have ever had."

No! I shouted in my head. He had saved me time after time and now be was leaving? I had no one else. What would I do? He would do this to stop James?

The idea made the dream crash down on me like sand and I was swallowed by the blackness.

I jolted awake, my head pounding. That was no a dream. It was a memory. From my human life.

James had been hunting me, as he had told Bella in the ballet studio when she went to "save her mother".

Riley was still holding me, only we weren't in the crowded basement I had been trapped in. Actually, I didn't know where we were.

Seth was in wolf form, walking around in the snow. When he saw me, he darted behind the trees.

When he come back, he was in khaki shorts and tennis shoes. "Hey, Alice. " he said, smiling widely.

He looked younger than he had yesterday. He had aged a bit after marrying his wife and have a daughter. But he had started morphing again, and looked slightly younger.

Riley glanced at me carefully. "Are you okay?" He whispered. "After you passed out, I wasn't sure you would come back. "

His eyes had something hidden in them, but I wasn't sure...

"I feel better now, actually." I fought the urge to snuggle closer to him in his arms. I don't know why I had even thought that. What was happening?

He smiled weakly.

Last time I had seen Riley, it had been a vision of him and Victoria attacking Edward. It hadn't been a pleasant sight, but at this point I was thankful that he had been around to save me and Seth.

I smiled up at him, wriggling out if his arms as nicely as possible. He seemed upset for a second but he quickly changed his attitude and grinned back.

I felt a tingling in my spine, and my stomach knotted as his grin grew. I felt my body heat up, feeling like I was going to burst into flames. I was going numb from the way he was looking at me.

Hey, stupid. You are married to Jasper. My subconsious muttered at me. I looked away fron Riley in response, but the tingling didnt go away.

Seth laughed as if he knew something neither Riley nor me knew. He stopped laughing as I glanced at him.

"Riley. " I said, turning to him. "Where are we?" I asked.

"Canada. I have no idea where exactly but somewhere in Canada. Victoria was careful not to leak any details. She's lucky she didn't." He answered softly.

"Hmm. " I murmured. "She took me because I could see the future but why did she take Seth?"

He snorted. "There are rumors in the vampire world that include the possibility of wolves blocking out the potential ability to see the future. I'm not sure whether It's true."

"How would they even know about me?"

He looked at me as if I were joking. "Alice... you can see the future. Not many can do that. You are special. The Volturi wants you. Victoria wants you dead first."

"I'm common knowledge now?" I questioned.

"Everyone wants to either be, kill, join, or visit Mary Alice Brandon Cullen. " he murmured simply.

"Why kill?"

Seth watched me carefully. Riley and him shared a glance before Riley turned his attention to me.

"You ruin alot of plans for both the Volturi and for Victoria. It's a struggle, not being able to hurt the Cullens because of their little physic qnd their mind reader. "

I processed his words. "So Edward will be next?!" I yelled all of a suddenly. "She is taking him next?"

"Bingo." He said.

For the first time in a while, I was afraid of How this would end. My family had problems of their own, and now this?

We were falling apart at the worst possible time. And us falling apart would be the cause of our deaths.
