Chapter 6 - Take Good Care of Her

"It's been a week, Alex... Why doesn't she wake up?"

Lena had been at the DEO for a week, straight, without leaving Kara's bedside. Her image was one of dismay, the dark circles under her eyes from the few hours of sleep were starting to get deep.

"I don't know, Lena... I really wish I could give you that answer, I really do. I'm as clueless as you are." Alex answered Lena.

"Did I do something wrong? I'm going to study this device again, it's not possible..."

Alex put her hand on Lena's shoulder, trying to bring her to her senses and calm her, preventing her from going back inside that lab.

"Lena, you didn't do anything wrong. You've checked everything hundreds of times, saw that everything worked as it should. I've also done all the tests possible and we saw that everything is fine with her. We can't even get blood to analyze anymore, the needles no longer penetrate her skin, the gunshot wound healed as soon as you took the kryptonite from her body. Her body is fine, it is her mind that needs to come back."

"If only J'onn could get into the minds of Kryptonians..."

"I thought the same... but I don't think we have anything to do at the moment. She's monitored 24 hours a day, we've even increased the power of the inductors. We just have to wait."

"It was my fault, Alex... I caused this."

"Of course it was not your fault, Lena. It's not your fault if Lillian Luthor freaks out. She's locked up, won't be out for the next 8 lives... and I know she's your mother, but I hope she rots in there for the what she did to Kara... and to you."

"And with you too. I see the worry on your face the same way it's written on mine... and I've seen the panic, the pain... everything I've been through, you've been through too. Kara is so lucky to have you by her side, a person with all this strength... that I don't have."

"You're a lot stronger than you think... you saved my sister's life, Lena... I couldn't have done it without you." Alex touched Lena's arm and squeezed lightly, knowing she could never thank Lena enough for her genius mind that thought of a solution so quickly, even in a moment of so much distress.

They looked at Kara lying on that bed, perfect, without a scratch, her face was no longer pale. She was physically 100%, but why didn't she wake up? It was the thought that tormented them both, and for which they had no answer.

"Go home for a while, get some sleep, get something to eat... you look terrible." Alex said to Lena.

"You're not leaving here either, and you also are not the greatest of beauties right now, Danvers..."

"The difference is that I work here, I have to be here."

"I hadn't thought of that... please let me stay here with her, don't send me away. I just want to be close to her as soon as she wakes up."

Touched by the love in Lena's eyes, Alex agreed to let her stay with Kara as long as she ate something. She didn't want Lena to get sick, Kara wouldn't forgive her if she hadn't taken care of Lena while she was sleeping. And at that moment she would give anything to be listening to her sister's scolding.

"It's so beautiful your love for Kara... I'm glad my sister gets so much love."

"I'm the one who doesn't deserve her love... she does deserve all the love in the world. She's always brought out the best in me, Alex, and I don't know if I can give her half the love she deserves."

Lena had taken a quick shower in the DEO locker rooms, washed her hair. The chill of wet hair helped to relieve the headache that had been with her for days because of sleep deprivation. It was late at night, Alex had gone home to sleep for a few hours, promising to come back as soon as he woke up. She wasn't getting much time away from the DEO either, not with her sister in that endless sleep. Only a few agents on duty were present at the DEO, everything was peacefully silent and the low light allowed to see the moon outside, the lights of the surrounding buildings.
