What did you do? I keep asking myself. I quickly type a reply.
What? I my phone starts ringing. I go outside and answer.
"Hello?"
"What did you do to Daniel?" Sophie asks, worried.
"What are you talking about?"
"He came home, ran inside to his room and locked the door."
"What did he say happened?"
"He won't talk to me. He's never like this."
"I don't think I did anything."
"Can you call him or something?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. Bye." She says, and hangs up. I find Daniel's contact. I press call, and the phone rings, and rings, and goes to voicemail. I call again. Voicemail. What's gotten into him? Is it something I said?
~*~*~*~*~
After a few hours the guests leave. I check the time 12:34. Weird I think. I suddenly feel extremely tired. I put on my pyjamas and brush my teeth. I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.
~*~*~*~*~
"You must have been pretty tired yesterday." Mom says, sitting next to me as we eat breakfast.
"Yeah."
"Well, now you know we have to clean up."
"Yeah." Surprisingly, the balloons are still sticking right up. I grab one and pop a small hole in it. I suck the helium out of the balloon.
"Hey mom!" I yell, in a high pitched voice. Mom laughs, and grabs another balloon, pops a hole in it, and sucks out some helium.
"Hey! Get cleaning!" After having a conversation with balloons, we clean up. I get dressed, put on my makeup and brush my hair, I get in my moms car, (because I haven't gotten my new one yet) and drive to Daniels. I knock on the door and Sophie answers.
"He's upstairs."
"Thanks."
I take off my shoes and jacket and put them in the closet. I walk up to Daniels room and knock on the door. I hear footsteps and a clicking noise. The door opens and I quickly wrap him in a hug. I'm sorry, I whisper, and he lets go.
"For what?"
"Didn't I do something?"
"Sort of."
"I'm sorry!" I say, "what did I do?"
"You didn't do anything, well... Um..er... It's just, here, come in." We walk into his room and sit on the couch.
"What's going on?"
"It's just, the song. It was beautiful, but that was the song, that, well, that's the song I was listening to when... When I found out my dad died." I'm in complete shock. "And I just haven't listened to it since."
"Oh my Gosh. I'm so sorry, I didn't know I-"
"It's-" I softly press my lips to his. I have my arms around his shoulders, one on his neck. Suddenly everything stops. I feel like we are the only two people in the world. He pulls away.
"It's okay. Everything is."
"Okay."
"Jade?"
"Yes?"
"It's been too long since I told you I love you."
"True."
"Jade?"
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I love you too."
~*~*~*~*~
After spending a few hours at Daniel's, we go to dinner.
Salad, the usual.
"Do you ever not eat salad?" Daniel asks.
"Chicken, sometimes."
"You mean like a chicken Caesar salad?"
"Ha, yes, but no. Like KFC or McDonalds. I just love salad."
"And I love you." He smiles, and looks down at his plate and starts to fiddle with his fork.
"Hey," I say softly, "look up, I love you too, okay?"
"Okay." We eat the rest of our dinner in silence. Daniel pays and we leave. I get out of his car, kiss him goodnight, get into my car and leave.
~*~*~*~*~
Phone, I think, must. Find. Phone. I throw all the couch cushions off the couch and onto the living room floor. There's only one cushion left. The very spot Daniel is sitting on.
"Get up." I say.
"What? No way. I'm comfortable."
"Well I guess you won't be once I pull this seat from under you!"
"Like you can."
"Of course I can." I grip the couch and pull.
"See?"
"Wait!"
"You can't do this!" I growl and pull on the cushion. I give it all my strength. I tug one more time and the cushion slips right out from underneath Daniel. He falls on the ground. I see something shiny on the couch.
"Phone!" I yell, and run to grab it.
"Holy crap." Daniel says laughing.
"I told you I could. For my phone, I would do anything."
We put everything back together and sit on the couch.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Of course! What is it?"
"Well, on this day, July 7, my parents always watched this one movie, and my mom stopped watching it after my dad died. I thought maybe, I could try it with you."
"Of course! what movie is it?"
"It's called Miracle on 34th Street."
"Oh! My mom loves that movie. I think we have it."
"Perfect." We put on the movie and watch the first half hour, eating popcorn and drinking lemonade. We're snuggled up really close, my head on his chest. After a few minutes I feel something wet fall on my cheek.
