1 day before....
Doggy set the case file down in front of me. "Already? We just finished the Alley case." "Yeah, but chief knows you're the best detective here. And only a genius can solve this case." He said, sipping from the steaming mug in his hand. "What case is it?" I asked. Doggy lowered the cup. "They're calling it the piggy case." "This was all over the news and we just started solving it?" I asked, flipping open the manila folder. "Actually some others tried and gave up. Said there was a weird aura about the piggy house." Doggy answered, leaning over my desk to look at the pictures. "Yikes. That's barely anything to go off of. No leads, witnesses-" "What do you mean 'weird aura?'" I interrupted. "Look I'm not the one on this case. Are you going to the house tomorrow?" "The house...?" "The Piggy house. Where Georgie was last seen." "Oh. I don't know. Could you come? You know I would feel safer." Doggy sighed. "I would but tomorrow is my day off. And they didn't assign me to this case." He said regretfully. "Who did they assign then?" I asked "Only you..." Doggy answered, turning towards the door. "But hey if anyone can do it, it's you Purple." He opened the door and it closed with a thud. I sighed as I looked at the file. There were only two pictures. One of a large three story house with pink, green, and blue wood. The next picture was of a young teen with a light blue shirt, a blue jacket and jeans. Age, 14. Height, 5"6. Weight, 118. And that was all. How was I going to find Georgie with just this? No relatives, no nothing. Doggy was right. The only place to start was with his house. The door creaked open. I looked up. It was chief Poley. "Chief how am I supposed to find Georgie with this?" He sighed and shut the door. "Look, Purple you know full well you are the best detective here. I fully trust you on this." "But why didn't you assign anyone else?" I asked exasperated. "No one else was willing." He answered. "But you didn't even ask me if I wanted to!" "Purple, I believe in you. Start with the piggy house." "Isn't it already wiped clean of any evidence?" "The other detectives never even made it to the door." "Why?" I asked getting nervous. He didn't answer. "Call if you need me." I sighed as he left. This was going to be hard. Even harder than the 2 hour steak out Doggy and I had done for the Alley case. I already discovered in my first case that the news was not a reliable source but maybe something could help me out. As soon as I logged into my computer the break bell rang. I logged out and grabbed my lunch. I locked my office behind me and pocketed the red key. Only had to be stupid once. I walked past the garage and the stairs that led to chief's office. As I entered the cafeteria, laughing and loud noises filled my ears. Doggy was sitting with his friends. He looked at me and patted the empty chair next to him. I slipped into the seat and took out my sandwich. They had been talking about the shows they liked to watch but the conversation stopped when I sat down. The other officers looked at me. I didn't know their names. I didn't usually chat with any one but Doggy because we had been partnered for more than one case. The officer sitting on my left cleared her throat. "So Purple? What case are you working on now? Doggy said it was huge." "It's a missing persons case. And it's classified." I replied "Let me guess? So big the rest of us nobodies can't know about it?" The other said. I looked at Doggy, uncomfortable with their questions. All the others had been jealous of how much chief favored me. But I had worked hard to get to where I was. Doggy noticed how harsh they were being. "Hey cut it out. Just because you don't work hard doesn't mean you can pick on someone who does!" "Ooh! Doggy! You got quite the mouth when you're talking to your friends." "Were my friends. You can't except someone who's different! News flash, you will never be as good an officer as Purple!" Doggy slammed his paw on the table and stood up. "Let's go." Everyone was stunned as Doggy and I left them and moved outside. I set my lunch down on the concrete table, and sat down on the cold seat, the wind whipping my hair around my face. Doggy ate his sandwich not saying anything. "Doggy... why did you do that? They were your friends." Doggy tossed his wrapper into the trash. " They've always been really mean. I'm glad they're finally off my back." He answered quietly. I looked down at my food, feeling a pit in my stomach. "Different...?" I asked, the word imbedded in my mind. "It's no secret you're not like us Purple..." I looked at him. "Not like us?" I said my anger bubbling over. "Don't you think I know that!? Don't you think I look in the mirror every day and WISH I was like everyone else!?" I shouted, standing up. A few other officers stared at us but I didn't care. Doggy shrunk back in his seat. "Purple you know I don't..." I grabbed my lunch bag furious. " Purple!" Doggy called. I ignored him. Not like us... different... you'll never be like them... The words bounced around my head like a ping pong ball. As I walked past the others one of them called out, "Trouble in paradise?" They all hooted with laughter. "Shut up!" I yelled, swiveling around. Before they could respond I left the cafeteria and fished in my pocket for my key. I jammed it into the lock and violently pushed the door open. Doggy came rushing down the hallway. "Purple!" He pleaded. I closed the door before he could reach me and locked it. I had never been so mad at him before. In all our years of friendship. Yeah I was different. And I thought about it every single day. He had no right to bring that up! Or...maybe I was over reacting a bit. I mean, he had defended me from the others. I walked over to the door and unlocked it. Doggy was leaning against the opposite wall. He looked up. "Purple, I'm really-" "It's ok. I know you were just defending me. And you're right. I'm different. And I'm proud to be. I overreacted and I'm so sorry." "So am I." Doggy looked down. I walked over to him and threw my arms around him. He stiffened. But then he relaxed and slowly wrapped his arms around me too. "You're my best friend Doggy. More than that! You're my family. I never want that to change." I said, stepping back. He smiled. "It never will." "I have to get back to work. See you later?" I asked. He nodded. "Yeah of course!" We smiled at each other. I went back in my office and shut the door. I had never hugged Doggy before. It had felt nice. He really was like a brother to me. It felt like we had known each other for ever. When I joined the police force we had worked our first case together. I sat down in my office chair and the wheels squeaked as I rolled closer to the laptop screen. I typed my password in, the keyboard clicking away. Search bar: Piggy case. Missing... Piggy household... For a month..... kidnapped?.....Family gone crazy... Hold on. I moved the mouse across the table till the cursor was over the article. I clicked on it. Strange images flooded the screen. A picture of Georgie and his family, A pig with a red eye, Millionaire Mr.P, a strange blue liquid. "What is this?" I whispered, skimming over the article. I was getting more and more convinced whoever wrote this was insane. It was about a cure to a strange disease that Mr.P's wife had. He developed a cure and tested it on the Piggy family. Georgie had been the only one who didn't take it. They all went crazy. The article was written by someone named Badgy. "What a bunch of.. This is why the other detectives were too scared to go near the house, they read this trash!" I mumbled. I exited out of the article and moved on to a news video. A picture of Georgie popped up. "Three weeks ago young teenager Georgie piggy went missing! Some say it was a kidnapping and others say it was a run away situation. What do we say? Mr.P. He gave the Piggy family a cure that-" A name popped up under the reporter. Badgy. I paused the video. With disgust, I realized the news reporter was the same person who wrote the article. He was filling people's heads and causing them to be scared of something that wasn't real. I went to another video. "The Piggy case is still a mystery to the Lucella police department. Multiple detectives have tried and failed to uncover the mysterious disappearance of Georgie Pi-" I paused. Well it won't be a mystery to us anymore soon. Detective Purple is on the case. I smiled confidently. I watched and read a bunch more stories. I was in the middle of a ridiculous article that said he had been abducted by aliens when someone knocked. "Come in!" I didn't look up when the door shut. "Detective Purple?" I looked up. Chief Poley was pulling a chair up to my desk. "Is that really the best-" n"Oh don't worry Chief. I know most of these are fake. It's just to give me some ideas." "Ah. How long do you plan on staying?" "When I finish these articles I'll head home and-" "Look at the clock Purple." I looked at the analog clock on the wall. It was 9:30. "How did it get so late?" I gasped. Chief laughed. "You're working hard detective. You don't have to stay at the office all day." "I know. I'm going to the Piggy house tomorrow. "That's good. Do you want backup?" "It's just a house. I'll be fine. I'll have my police radio if anything happens." He looked unsure but I was prepared for whatever would happen tomorrow.
I zipped my laptop into the black case and left my office, making sure I locked the door. Doggy was waiting in the garage. "Took you awhile." He smiled. "Oh gosh Doggy how long have you been waiting?" He laughed. "Relax. Chief had me on cell duty. Just ended. How's the case?" "Fine. Did some research." "That's good. Any progress?" "Not much. I'm going to the Piggy house tomorrow." "To bad I won't be here. I want to hear all about it." "You will, don't worry." I smiled at him. "I have to get home." "See you." He got in his old red car. It roared to life. I shielded my eyes from the bright glare of the tail lights. I waved. Doggy drove away, rocks crackling under his tires. Dirt kicked up into the air. "Tomorrow, I go to the Piggy house..." I whispered.Chief entered my office. After a long night I woke up and started getting more and more nervous about the the Piggy case. "Are you sure you don't want backup? It could be dangerous...." I did want backup but if it couldn't be Doggy I was fine on my own. "I got it chief." He nodded and left. I tied my hair into a high ponytail and tucked my gun into the inside of my brown detective jacket. I could use it if needed. I grabbed the keys to one of the police cars and headed off, case file tucked under my arm. Preparing for the worst.
I drove along, following the GPS to the address chief had given me. The longer I drove, the more the news articles were getting to my head. I tried to shake them away but they were like an annoying fly that refused to stop bugging me. After a very long drive I started to wonder if I was going in the wrong direction. I hadn't seen another sign of civilization for awhile. Just as I was going to call up Chief, a large house loomed ahead in the distance. As I neared it, the colors became clear. It was a direct match to the picture in the case file. This was it. I slipped my police radio into my pocket and made sure the gun was still there. I wasn't sure if anyone was home. There weren't any other cars around. I got out of the car and the door shut with a thud. After I locked it, I cautiously approached the front door. My boots crunched along the gravel and a knot of worry formed in my stomach. I knocked on the thick wooden door, looking around as I did. A plant was knocked over and dirt was covering the cement pathway. A faint smell of flowers filled my noise. It was silent as the grave. "This is the place where Georgie Piggy was last seen..." I whispered. THUMP! I whipped around, my heart pounding. My hand instinctively touched my gun. "What was that sound?" I said, the knot in my stomach feeling worse and worse. The front door opened and before I could turn around, something heavy whacked me on the head. I fell to the ground, a throbbing pain on my scalp and seeing stars. My eyes opened a crack and I saw a blur of pink before I passed out.
