"I've always been different from everyone else here. I'm a human in a world of animals and you've probably wondered why." I started, everything I tried to forgot coming back to me. "My parents were scientists. They would try to find cures to rare diseases. One day a new disease appeared. A little boy came in, all by himself. He had his arm covered in a blanket and he was in a panic. My mom got him to calm down and he let the blanket drop. His skin had started turning into human flesh. My parents had no idea what it was and they immediately started working on a cure. They called it the human disease. Then, one day, the patient that had come in disappeared. His parents never even came in. He had been in a lockdown room. They looked at the security cameras but he just vanished into thin air. Then, something went wrong in my parents lab. I was only 17 at the time. I was outside the lab, waiting to surprise them on their lunch break. When a huge explosion threw me against the wall. Green gas was everywhere, and I almost suffocated in the fumes. Turns out... that gas was the very cure my parents had been working on. They had measured something wrong and it caused the opposite reaction they wanted it to. I was saved from the burning lab by some other workers. Police went back to the place but-" My voice cracked and a tear slipped down my cheek. Doggy put his arm around me.
"I'm fine. But my parents were gone. Lost to the explosion. A few days later, I started turning human. People didnt accept me but I continued on with life. I lived in a small hotel, barely getting by with my job. I got a scholarship and was able to go to college. I started at the police station and was able to afford my own home. There you have it... my story." I wiped away the tears on my face.
"Purple I'm so sorry. That's awful." Doggy finally said. I didn't say anything, afraid I would start crying again.
"Well my story isn't that eventful but.. my parents were killed in a shooting when I was 13. I went to live with my grandmother and moved out a few years ago."
"Doggy.."
"It's ok. It was a long time ago."
We turned a corner and the green and blue light of the gas station sign lit up the street. The windows and doors were shattered, glass littered the parking lot.
"Oh my gosh..."I whispered.
"The infected must have hit here." Doggy and I looked at each other and cautiously approached the building, stepping in patches without glass.
"Do we just take what we need...?" I asked.
"I guess. I'll grab some bags."
"Doggy, this doesn't feel right."
"There aren't any signs of workers and this place will be closed for awhile." I hesitated but took the plastic bag he offered me. I loaded food, medical supplies and water into it, trying to keep it light.
"And the gas?"
"Let's see if it will even work." We went back outside, a bag in each of our hands with things we would need. Doggy pressed the buttons on the machine, causing it to light up.
"At least we'll have gas." He said. We filled up the tank and headed back.
"I'm so glad you're with me for this Doggy. I don't know if I would have survived on my own."
He laughed. "Same here, Purple."
"What happened to all the other officers when the pig broke in?" The question had been on my mind for awhile.
"Not sure. Think they all left in a hurry, the prisoners escaped in the chaos."
"All of the people we worked hard to put away..."
"I think we have bigger problems than some escaped convicts."
"How far away is the forest?"
"About a half hour."
"We should clean up first. Put ointment on all our cuts. How's your back?"
"Better. You're leg?"
"Much better."
"Do you think it's.. nevermind."
"What?"
"Do you think the animals that have gone crazy are... infectious?"
"That's a theory I hadn't thought of... If they are then we're both in trouble." I said nervously.
"Well you did say the Piggy family got it from a cure gone wrong."
"Yeah. Maybe Mr.P has been giving it to more people." We reached the car, placing the bags in the backseat.
"We should get this glass cleaned up." Doggy stated.
"I don't think we have time. The pig could be back any second."
"You're right." We applied the ointment to our cuts and wrapped our bruises in bandages. Doggy poured the gas in.
"You drive." I said, after we had put the medical supplies away. "You know where it is."
"Alright." We got in the car and buckled up our seatbelts.
"To the woods." I said.
"To the woods..." Doggy repeated.
Little did I know those woods were the last place I would ever want to return to soon.
