I floored the gas pedal sending dirt and rocks flying into the air. The wheels made a deafening screech as I drove down the road, putting as much distance between me and the monster as I could.
The sun had already set. I must have been knocked out for awhile. My breathing gradually slowed the farther away I got.
"What in the world was that thing? It looked so familiar yet... I've never seen anything like it before. I need to get some help from the station." Something in my brain clicked.
"The article... Badgy was right..." I turned the wheel and eased the car to the side of the road. I groaned and let my head drop on the wheel.
"I need to get some help from the station." As I reached in my pocket for my radio I remembered that I no longer had a weapon or communication. Great. Luckily the GPS was still there so I was able to safely navigate back home.
I pulled into the station parking lot and noticed all the cars were gone.
"Strange..." I muttered. I took the key out of the ignition and stepped out of my car. Everything was eerily silent. The door was open. I walked inside, listening for any sounds.
"Hello...? Is anyone here?" I called. The speaker crackled and I jumped.
"Attention! A monster is in the station, get to the garage now!" The speaker cut off and I heard static. Fear flooded my body.
" Another monster? I need to get to the garage!" I raced down the stairs and into the jail cell room. All of the prisoners were gone. Even... I raced around the corner. "Oh no..." She was gone. She must have escaped during the chaos. There was no time to worry about that. I heard footsteps along the tile floor. I turned. It was another crazed pig. A different one. I ran back to the stairs and ran up, slipping at the top.
That small trip was all it needed to catch up. It swung its bat down on my ankle, sending a searing pain up my leg. I stifled a cry and stood up, barely able to walk. I limped towards the garage door, grasping for the handle. I finally gripped it and opened the door. A car was parked in the garage, lights on. It was... "Doggy!" I shouted. I went as fast as I could, dodging the baseball bat as I went and wincing with every step. I grabbed a pipe nearby and swung it at the monster. The pig fell to the ground, bat slipping from its hand.
"We need gas Purple!" Doggy shouted. I nodded and grabbed a nearby tank and poured it into the chamber. The pig started getting up. I rushed to the car and got in, hurredly closing the door. I leaned back against the seat. "That was close." Doggy said.
The bat swung into the backseat window, causing an earsplitting noise. I screamed as glass sprayed us, leaving cuts along our bodies.
"GO!" I yelled. Doggy floored the gas pedal and we were thrown back against our seats. Doggy and I remained silent, breathing heavily.
"Where are we going?" I asked, inspecting my leg.
"Anywhere thats not here. How's your leg?"
"Hurts. That thing smashed it with a baseball bat."
"You're lucky I showed up on my day off."
"And you're lucky I managed to grab gas when a murderous pig was trying to kill me Doggy."
"Touche Purple. We really need to find out whats going on."
" I know. I've started to see these things all over the place." I winced when I touched a particularly sore spot on my leg.
"Where else have you seen them?"
"There was one at the Piggy house. Knocked me out."
"We need to find out what caused this. How much gas was in that tank."
"Not enough."
"Lets just put as much space between us as and that monster as we can."
"Agreed."
Doggy hit a bump and I cried out when a flash of pain hit my leg. He looked at me with concern.
"I think you need medical attention Purple."
"I'll be fine! We cant risk them following us to a hospital and putting patients in danger. I'm sure I'll be alright soon." Doggy looked dubious but I tried not to show more signs of pain.
"So you said there's more of them?" Doggy asked after a long pause.
"Im not sure. I only know there's two. And they were both pigs."
"Some sort of pig infection?"
"No. It's the Piggy family."
"What?" Doggy said with disbelief.
"I read an article where the Piggy family was subject to a cure gone wrong. I didn't believe it at first but those attacks were living proof."
"That's insane."
"I know. Doggy, I am eternally grateful you were there to save me. I can never repay you. You literally saved my life."
"Dont mention it. Isnt that what family does?." He smiled at me. We were in town now. No one was around. The streetlights were off. It was pitch black except for Doggy's light illuminating the road.
The car started slowing down. "Why are we stopping?" I asked, looking out the window.
"We're out of gas." Doggy said grimly. We were by the gallery. Dark alleys were on either side of the car.
"What do we do?"
"Purple. Be very very quiet." Doggy whispered.
"What?" Doggy pointed out his window. I leaned over and put my hand over my mouth. A pig and a sheep emerged from the shadows. Both wielding weapons. Their eyes were glowing red.
"It's not just pigs." Doggy muttered. I nodded and looked out my window. Another one emerged from the shadows. We were surrounded. The only open area was the door to the gallery. We had gone there a month ago for a robbery.
"Doggy, we can get to the gallery." Doggy looked at me like I was insane.
"Purple-"
"We dont have another choice! The window is broken and I dont think I can survive another attack."
"I'll distract them. You get inside and immediately lock the door when we get in." I nodded. "One...two..three!" Doggy opened the door and ran away from the monsters. They all followed him like zombies. I snuck out of the car and crept towards the gallery. The door had been left unlocked.
"Doggy!" I shouted. He ran towards me and I grabbed him and pulled him inside. He pressed against the door with all his strength.
"Find something to shut it with!" I saw a hammer on a bench next to a loose painting with nails spread all across the floor. I quickly brought them over to Doggy. Together we nailed a board across the door and locked it. We slid onto the floor, catching our breaths.
"How's your ankle?" I rolled up my pant leg to reveal the bloody mess under my leg. Doggy gasped. "Purple!-"
"Stop. Please. It feels a little better already."
"Purple you can't be walking on that... lets at least get you cleaned up." I agreed and we went over to a water fountain. I put my leg on a bench.
Doggy ripped a piece of his shirt off and rinsed it under the water.
"Doggy you didnt have to do that." He didn't reply. He brought the cloth over. "Give it to me." I said. He gave me the wet cloth and I started cleaning the blood off my leg. I inhaled sharply.
"I'm going to look around." He said. I nodded. He walked away. I continued rubbing the cloth on my ankle. The blood wiped away, the cloth now soaked. There was a large purple and green bruise on my ankle. The blood had stopped.
"Woah. That's quite a bruise..." Doggy had come back.
"Yeah. It's nothing more than that though I'll be fine in a couple days. Did you find any other exit?" Doggy sat down next to me.
"Yeah but they all require keys that we don't have."
"We can just spend the night here, I'm sure they will be gone tomorrow morning." I closed my eyes and set my head on Doggy's shoulder, over come with exhaustion. I looked up at him. He looked down at me.
"I'll take the first watch."I nodded, already falling asleep.I woke up to glass breaking. I shot up. Doggy had fallen asleep too.
"Where was that?" I asked.
"Upstairs.." Doggy answered. He started up to the second floor.
"Please be careful."I said. He nodded.
I stayed in the dark for awhile listening. Suddenly there was a loud thud and Doggy yelled for help. I quickly ran up the stairs, silently praying that he was alright. My hands shot to my mouth when I saw Doggy in a crumpled heap on the floor with one of the pigs from outside standing over him.
"Doggy!" I shouted. He looked up at me. The pig looked up and started towards me. I went back down the stairs, hoping to distract it from Doggy. It worked and the loud footsteps followed me down. I kept facing it, my hand behind me trying to grab the hammer from earlier. When I couldn't find it I turned around, saw it on the floor a few feet away. I grabbed it and turned back to the monster. I gasped when it swung the bat. I ducked and ran past it, heading for the door. I smashed the planks and turned around, wielding the hammer. The pig moved slowly, bat at its side. I swerved around it and ran back up.
"Purple!" Doggy shouted, still on the ground. I looked down to the second floor. The monster started up the stairs. I dropped the hammer down and it landed on its head, knocking the pig out. I ran over to Doggy.
"How did it get in?"
"Broke a window and hit me in the back."
"We need to get out." Doggy nodded. I slipped my arm around his waist and helped him up. "Put your weight on me." We slowly went down the stairs, Doggy breathing heavily. The pig lay on the floor, a pool of blood forming around it, barely breathing. We went out. The sun had started to rise, casting long shadows in the alley. We made it to the car and took a second to breath. I took over the wheel to let Doggy have a break.
"They just don't stop coming after us do they?" I said, exasperated.
"I don't get it... but hey, it's nothing we can't handle. After all, remember when we made that arrest in the alley?" I looked at him.
"Yeah but we weren't arresting these...things! They don't do anything but attack us!" Doggy stayed quiet. I put the key in and put the car in drive.
"Look Purple, you're a good person. Even in desperate times, you held onto your morality. It's the people like you that succeed. As long as you stay who you are, you'll get to where you need to be." I was touched. Doggy had never said anything that sweet before. This situation was causing us to grow closer than we ever had.
"You're right Doggy. I can't let this situation make me lose sight of who I am."
He smiled. "That's good to hear. Now, let's find somewhere actually safe."
"Sounds like a plan. But where?"
Doggy thought for a second. "My family and I used to go camping in the smokey woods. There's a fence around it and a store nearby that we could get supplies from."
"Do you remember where it is?"
"Yeah. I can drive."
"Doggy.. you're hurt."
"Don't worry about me."
"Wait... there isn't any gas!" Doggy smacked his forehead, "Ah! I forgot about that."
"What do we do?"
"There's a gas station a couple streets away, but how do we get there?"
"Let's just walk, and fill the tank we already have." I suggested.
"Good idea. I'll get it." I got out of the car as Doggy reached into the backseat and grabbed the tank. We started to the gas station.
We walked in silence for awhile, our boots crunching along the rocky path, the wind whispering around us, until Doggy spoke.
"If we don't make it out of this-"
"Don't say that." I said firmly.
"We should tell each other our stories." I slowed to a stop. My situation was a sore topic and I wasn't sure I was ready to talk about it.
"Only if you want to. I'll tell you mine but if you aren't comfortable..."
"No. It's fine. You deserve to know. Prepare though... it's a long story."
