Doggy and I finally reached the Smoky Woods. We unpacked our bags an went into the safety of the fenced areas.
"Where is everyone?" I asked. Doggy shrugged.
"It's off season, there aren't a lot of people."
"Yeah, but there's also no people..."
"Place to ourselves then." I couldn't shake off my feelings of unease.
Doggy had sleeping bags in his trunk that we rolled out onto the dirt floor.
"What do you want to do when this is all over?" I asked, laying in my sleeping bag looking up at the leaves.
" Continue police work."
"Why did you become an officer?"
Doggy stayed silent for awhile "I wanted to make sure no one would lose their parents the way I lost mine."
We both stayed quiet, listening to the wind in the leaves overhead.
"That is a really good reason." I finally said. Doggy didn't say anything but when I looked over, a tear had slipped down his cheek. I sat up and placed my hand over his. He looked at me.
"I'm glad you're always there for me." He whispered.
"Me too. And I always will be." I whispered back.We spent the rest of the day talking about our hopes for after all this madness. We talked about our childhood and why we took the career path we did.
"Why did you become a detective?" Doggy asked.
"Similar reasons to why you became an officer. I wanted to see if I could find out what happened to the kid that disappeared. But the trail went cold a long time ago."
The sun began setting and I gradually grew more and more tired. I gazed off at the sun as it slipped out of view.
"What are you thinking?" Doggy asked.
"I think... those monsters.. they were our friends. They were normal people with normal lives. Just like we are. And I almost killed one. Did for all I know..."
" Purple, don't hold that over yourself. You did it as self defence."
"It could have been someone's family member, Doggy."
"We don't know if people can even come back from that stage of madness. Don't take the blame. We've had a long couple of days. Let's get some rest."
"What if we aren't safe?"
"We'll be fine. Get some rest Purple, you need it."
I lay back on my sleeping bag, listening to the crickets chirping. The stars had started coming out like little lights in the universe. My eyelids closed.
If only I had kept them open...I woke up in a cold sweat. I had a nightmare where Piggy and I were locked in a room and it just kept getting closer and closer. I looked over to Doggy's sleeping back. It was empty.
"Doggy?" I called out. An empty bottle was on the ground next to me, drops of blue liquid glowing at the bottom. "Doggy?" I called with more urgency. The fire we had lit had gone out. I grabbed a flashlight and shined it into the darkness. I stood up, moving the light around across the dirt path. It landed on Doggy's purple shirt. He was by one of the cabins, facing away from me. "Oh Doggy. What are you doing you scared me." He turned around. I dropped the flashlight. "Doggy!" I cried. His clothes were ripped and tattered, cuts lined his fur. And his eyes were glowing red. He had become one of them.
