It had been a few days since your date with Jake Kiszka. The weather, although it was only early autumn, began to seep in a little more. You could start to see the leaves going from a nice green to different hues of warm colors from outside the window in your room. It was nice, you loved this time of year. It did shift your mood a little, however.
You had been keeping busy with writing, jotting down ideas and outlines of things to cover next, but you felt the world sort of slow down around you too. It was like, whenever you sat down to actually write, you couldn't help but check your phone. Annie had mentioned to you a few times about how you seemed over-eager to write, and maybe that was why you couldn't do it, but you knew the truth. Your head was in the clouds when it should've been grounded in reality.
"You know," Annie started upon returning home from her day-job, throwing her keys onto the kitchen table as she approached you from where you perched on the couch, laptop open in your lap, "I think we need to do a grocery run."
You chewed your cheek, watching the type-bar flash at you from the brightness illuminating off the screen. The stupid thing was annoying you to no-end so you grumbled, closing the lid when nothing came to you, shifting your body to face Annie now.
"I think you're right. I feel like I need to get out or I'll waste away here." You told her. Annie smiled, rubbing her hands together to get some warmth out of them.
"Great! But you're driving. It's getting colder out there and I don't feel like freezing my hands off while gripping the wheel, ya know?" She was always like this, a mild inconvenience didn't bode well for her.
"Annie, it's like..." You looked outside, then pulled out your phone from the front pocket of the hoodie you were wearing, "60 degrees outside. How are you already cold?" You snorted, pocketing your phone again. Annie crossed her arms and pouted at you, tapping her foot.
"I'm not from here! You know that! It's getting closer to sweater weather and I'm not excited." She replied. Unlike you, Annie didn't love any cold weather at all. You were surprised she had lived here this long just on account of the fact she practically shriveled up whenever the temperatures dropped below freezing.
"Well I am. Halloween is coming up in a few weeks. I thought you loved going out to see all the cute costumes kids come up with?" You rose from your position on the couch, passing her to go put on something that looked at least presentable to the public eye. Pajamas and a sweatshirt often didn't make the cut.
Annie stuck her tongue out at you when you passed, waiting for you to get dressed and grab your purse so you two could go. Grocery runs were always fun together, but you also made a mental note of other things you might need to pick up while out and about.
When you returned to Annie, dressed in something fairly decent to run errands in, the two of you left for your car. You hadn't driven it in awhile, everything in town was close enough to usually walk to anyway like your editor's office, or a few restaurants and bars, and even your favorite book store. It was convenient for you to be able to get out on foot every once and awhile, but that didn't mean a car wasn't necessary. The grocery store wasn't as close as everything else though. Annie's parents lived a few towns over, so when inevitably you did need your car, that was typically the longest haul you could handle making. The topic of your family was... well unimportant for now.
The two of you settled into your shitty car and took off not long after. You didn't even notice your phone chime from inside your purse, the music Annie was shuffling through from the passenger's seat was too loud.
------------
You had left to get groceries and other necessities a few hours ago. By the time you and Annie stumbled into your shared apartment (many bags in tow since neither of you believed in taking two trips) you were glad you had gotten out.
