"It's rude to stare, you know? What's on your mind?" Evelyn was reading a book sitting on the couch and Eliza was resting her head on her lap. Outside the window, the sun slowly set and the moon began to wake from its slumber. The living room was dimly lit because Eliza finds bright rooms irritating and though she didn't say anything, Evelyn still figured by the way, because she would squint her eyes every minute.
Ever since she heard CC's story, she couldn't help but think about Evelyn's past. What happened after they broke up? Why did people call her the demon of the courthouse? More importantly, why didn't she fight for their love?
"So are you just going to stare or I'm going to fish it out of you?" Eyes still on the book.
"Why?" Eliza blurted out.
"Why what?"
"Why didn't you fight for it?"
"You'll have to elaborate, love." Blushing at the pet name, Eliza shook her head and sat up to face Evelyn.
"Why didn't you fight for Rebecca?"
Evelyn seemed unbothered but deep in her eyes, Eliza could see she hit something in there.
Evelyn sighed and replied, "Some things aren't worth fighting for." Eliza was taken aback by her response making her heartache a little. Eyeing the woman before her she threw another question without consulting her mind.
"What happened after you broke up?" Evelyn took a while to answer as she flipped a page. "Nothing much. I continued my practice and she moved on." But why does Eliza feel a bit unconvinced by this response?
"Okay. Why did people call you the Demon of the Courthouse." The name echoed in Evelyn's head giving her flashbacks. She closed her eyes to get a hold of her thoughts and closed the book she was holding. Eliza couldn't comprehend what was happening but she had a feeling she's gone too far.
"I-I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked." she retreated.
"Yes, because it's none of your business actually." Irritation can be heard from Evelyn's voice as her eyes were now devoid of emotions.
"I'm sorry. I was just curious." Eliza replied, with the last part ending in a whisper.
"Well, stop it because curiosity won't do you any good." Eliza only nodded and stood up to leave.
"Where are you going?" Evelyn asked a little bit annoyed and a little bit... sad?
"Home." That was all Eliza said.
"Why?"
"Because I want to." she shrugged.
With a stern look, Evelyn stood up and said in a cold voice, "Don't lie to me." She didn't notice Eliza was about to cry until she heard her sob.
"Then don't lie to me!" She was shocked by Eliza's sudden outburst. "Excuse me?!"
"Stop lying to me, Lyn! Stop lying to yourself!" There was something about that nickname that made her blood boil as the great Evelyn Craige had just now lost her temper.
"You try your best to help me with my insanity but you can't even help yourself!" She must admit, it hurt her that Eliza called herself insane but anger got the best of her.
"Fine! You wanna know why they call me the Demon?!" Eliza didn't realize she's gone too far and it wasn't like her to cause such outbursts. Hell, she didn't even know how to yell at someone out of anger.
"They called me a demon because I make people fear for their lives and aside from not losing a single case-" she stepped closer to Eliza and leaned to meet her eyes. "-I made criminals and lawyers dig their graves right then and there. Even the judge couldn't hold the gavel properly in my presence and those who summon me to the court know full well they were going to win despite the heaviness of the case." Eliza couldn't think and couldn't speak at this point, she seemed so small and helpless. Evelyn straightened her posture and looked down on the shorter woman. Clenching her jaw, she said, "It's like making a deal with the devil."
