You growled as you saw Thorin's actions. You crawled closer, knowing Smaug would try to hurt them with his fire. "What are you doing!?" You hissed as you had reached them. You lowered your head, so you were at Bilbo's and Thorin's eye level. Thorin glared at you. "Did you find it?" He says, his eyes going to Bilbo. You let out a frustrated snarl. "No, you have to get us," you snap and turn as you hear a sound. Thorin and Bilbo listen to it too, and they turn.

Seeing Smaug approaching over the mountain of treasure, you growl lowly and crane your neck, so you're in front of the dwarves. Smaug, recognizing Thorin, snarls. Suddenly, the remaining dwarves run out of the tunnel and face Smaug, their weapons out. Smaug roars and rushes at them; his chest and neck glow orange. "You will burn!" He growls, and just as Smaug bellows fire at you and your company, you let your fire meet his. With a roar, you yelled to your friends, " go!"

The dwarves and Bilbo turn and jump off the staircase. They tumble down the pile of treasure and land near the entrance to another tunnel, which they run into. Angrily, Smaug breathes fire in all directions. You roar but not in pain. You let your tail latch onto Smaug's neck, slamming him down in the ground. "Leave them!" You screamed and let your tail snake away from his throat.

When he got up, he stared bewildered at you. "Why do you protect the dwarf filth?" He asks and crawls closer to you. You stopped growling and straightened your neck. "They're like family," you said, watching him as he circled you. His yellow eyes were on you all the time. " did they know about this nature of yours?" He asked. "Yes, I've saved their lives in this," you said. You didn't know why you did tell him, but you felt comfortable with him. He sat down in front of you, looking at you with a tilted head. "Mind telling me how you got a family of dwarves and a hobbit?" He said.

You didn't expect he would be interested but let yourself slide down on the gold beside him and started to tell him about your life and how you got accepted into the company. Smaug listened to you all the time and never intruded if he didn't have any questions. You didn't forget your friends and decided to take a flyover. "Smaug, may we go outside?" You asked. Smaug didn't see any problems, so he nodded. The two of you walked out and left the dwarves.

You knew that you didn't want Smaug to die, so you flew long away from the mountain, learning about the war that would follow. You would return. You knew that.
