I looked in the mirror. I had let my medium brown hair fall loosely around my shoulders. I had picked out a dark green dress to compliment my green eyes, And black sandals that were covered by the length of the dress. I had put in a little bit of foundation and blush on but I didn't really like wearing makeup it made me feel fake, like I was lying about who I was.
I took a deep breath and walked out the door. Dylan and I had agreed to meet near the gargoyle to the left of the entrance to the ballroom. It was confusing but at least we would know where to find each other.
After a few minutes I saw Dylan walking towards me, his blonde hair was messy and flipped to the side, as usual. His brown eyes flashed with excitement. He was wearing black dress pants, a black suit with a white shirt underneath. And of course to top the outfit off his black high top vans with blue edges. I smiled, only Dylan would wear high tops with a suit. "So" Dylan said casually, "Shall we go inside?" I laughed and took his hand as he held it out to me.
"Absolutely" I said as he led me inside the ballroom.
We looked around in awe, the ballroom was beautifully decorated and had a stunning chandelier hanging from the ceiling, "That chandelier scares me" I whispered to Dylan half hoping he wouldn't hear me."What are you talking about?" He said with amusement, "It's so cool, this whole place is so cool" I didn't like it, it made me think that it would fall ontop of a bunch of people like in the Fantom of the Opera.
"Whatever I just won't think about it falling on us", I said steering us out from under it.
"Your ridiculous", Dylan said smiling, "Anyway", he said turing to face in front of me, "You wanna dance?" He said as he took my other hand into his.
"Sure" I said slipping my hands out of his and placing them around his neck. He placed his hands on my hips and we slow danced for a little. It wasn't awkward like it would have been for anyone else, probably because both of us felt comfortable around each other and we danced with each other sometimes for fun. Still something felt different, maybe it was the salty sea air or the smooth rocking of the boat. I didn't know what it was but dancing with Dylan had never felt that way before. My stomach got a touch of butterflies as I looked at Dylan smiling down at me.
When the song ended Dylan looked at me straight in the eyes and said the last thing I would have thought he would say because of the serious expression on his face, "You wanna go get a drink?" His face washed into a smile and he laughed.
"Wow, I thought you were going to say something smart, how stupid of me" I said with a smirk.
"I'm disappointed in you Lori" he said, "you've known me how long and you still kept the hope that one day I would utter something intelligent?!" He and I started laughing as he led me to the refreshment table. I picked up a plastic up and filled it with fruit punch. Then I got a plate and took a chocolate chip cookie and some grapes. Whenever I eat something sweet I always have to eat something else to get the icky feeling sweets leave in your mouth out. I know, it's weird.
I found Dylan slicing a piece of vanilla cake for himself. "This looks so good" he said almost drooling over the cake, "I'm so hungry!" He said as he put the huge price of cake onto his plate.
"Oh my gosh, Dylan that piece of cake is huge!" I said as we walked away from the table and outside onto the empty balcony.
"If they didn't want me taking this big of a piece than they shouldn't have put that big of a cake out there!"
I laughed as Dylan leaned his back on the railing.
"Dylan!" I said suddenly, "Think fast!" I tossed a grape into the air towards Dylan and he caught it in his mouth.
"Buckets!" He said, with a huge grin on his face.
"Hey I'm the one who threw it!" I said rolling my eyes playfully.
"Yeah, well I'm the one caught it!" Dylan said gently hitting my arm.
We finished our dessert and found a bench to sit on. We sat down and started to talk. Dylan and I could talk for hours on end, it seemed like we never ran out of things to talk about. Sadly the conversation ended when my mom walked over with Dave. They had walked up behind me while I was talking and Dylan had looked at them then back at me and then back at them. Right then I knew that it was my mom. "Hi Mom!" I said enthusiastically trying to hide my anger, she always had to show up with Dave and ruin perfectly good nights.
"Hi Lori, hi Dylan!" Dave said oblivious to my anger.
"That's not my name" I grumbled to him, " my name is Lorelei not Lori" I said in frustration, "Do not call me Lori"
"Oh I'm sorry I'm just used to your mother talking about you as Lori, I'll call you Lorelei if you want" he said guiltily.
"Lori be nice" my mom said to me in a impatient tone. Honestly I didn't care if I made Dave feel guilty, he should be after ruining my life even more than it was ruined before.
"Okay" I said giving my mom an, I'll be niece if you leave face.
"Okay well Dave and I are going to get some drinks" my mom said as she smiled at Dave and they walked off and into the ballroom.
"Well", I said in frustration, "she certainly knows how to ruin a night like this" I felt my face getting red with anger.
"Lori calm down she didn't change anything, she just wanted to check up on us" Dylan put his hand on my shoulder and turned me to face him and pulled me into a hug, "Everything's fine."
