"Hey, Lex. Can we talk for a sec," Travis stopped me in the hall.
I shrugged, "Sure what's up." I started to move toward my next class, but Travis stopped me again.
"This is important Lex," Travis said.
I stopped and turned to him, "You gonna tell me then?"
"Well, I wanted to tell you not to make too many summer plans," Travis shrugged, shoving his hands in his pockets. "I can't explain why, just keep it in mind, okay?"
I shook my head and looked away from him, smiling when I saw Connor.
He saw me and walked over, "Hey, Lex. We haven't talked about the end of the year prank in a while, I was wondering if we were still doing it?"
I stared blankly for a second before responding, "I. . . completely forgot. I mean, probably, we still have all the stuff right?"
"Yeah, you guys stashed it at Andrew's house," Connor broke out in a mischievous grin, "under his bed if I remember correctly."
"Well, I'll make sure the others are still in on it," I said, "Well, after class at least."
I followed Connor into the classroom and sat in my seat next to Hailey.
. . .
All of our planning got put on hold by the end of the year testing.
I groaned, walking out of the testing room. My legs and back were super stiff from sitting there for hours. I'd finished the test fairly early on, so I spent so long sitting there bored out of my mind for the rest of the time.
Hailey came up to me with a massive grin on her face, "Done at last! No more testing!"
"We have to take the same tests next year," I reminded her.
"Hush," Hailey swatted my arm, "Let me have this, jeez."
I grinned. "Do you have all of your stuff ready for next week?"
She nodded excitedly. "Why do I have to be a Hufflepuff though, we all know I'd be a Slytherin."
"Except you only act like one when someone messes with your friends, so Hufflepuff I say."
She huffs but doesn't disagree. "I knew I shouldn't have said to knock," She mumbled under her breath.
I followed Haily down the hall and out of the school. I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. "You're coming over to my house right?" I asked her.
"Duh," Hailey grinned. She looked me over and frowned, "Are you alright?"
I didn't respond. I didn't know how to. Adi joined us on the way, and we kept walking, and I felt on edge as if something big were about to happen.
Hailey went into my room while I waited on my porch for Connor. I wanted to talk to him about what Travis had said about summer.
Connor looked absolutely exhausted. "Hey," He lifted his hand in a lazy wave.
"I need to talk to you about something," I said, pulling him to the porch swing. "Travis was saying something about me not making plans this summer. . . do you have any idea why?"
Connor looked at me for a moment before answering, "I might, but it's hard to explain."
The feeling that something was about to happen went from bad to worse. I looked around to see if I could find out why when Connor stood up and grabbed me by the arm, "Inside, hurry."
The two of us rushed into the house. My heart was pounding in my chest as I looked to Connor for an explanation. But he was already off, looking for my dad. "Lex is in trouble!"
