Chapter 4

~the next day~

Toni wakes up and sees Steven lying next to her like always. She yawns and stretches before getting out of bed and heading downstairs to make breakfast for her husband. She hears Steven walking down the stairs and starts panicking because the breakfast isn't ready yet.

"Toni, my breakfast better be done and plated" he says while turning a corner. Toni just stays silent while trying to hurry and finish the breakfast.

"What's is this shit? Why isn't the breakfast done yet?!" Steven says angrily while approaching Toni, his voice getting louder and more aggressive by each word.

"I-I don't know, I'm sorry. It'll be done in a few minutes" she says with tears forming in her eyes out of fear.

"You know what that means right? No food for you today, you don't need it anyway, you're putting on too much weight. And don't do that crying shit, I'm the one who should be crying, I'm starving over here because you're taking too long to finish cooking." Steven says. He turns around and heads to sit on the couch in the main room. 

Toni wipes her tears away quickly and continues cooking the breakfast. She finishes it and brings it to him.

"Again, I'm sorry it took me longer than usual" Toni says in a soft and fearful tone.

"Whatever, you're never sorry for anything you do. Just don't let it happen again." He says while snatching the plate from her hands and adds a scoff at the end of his sentence. 

Toni heads upstairs and starts washing some of his clothes and picking out his outfit for the day. She's basically just his maid and sex toy. A few hours pass and he's finally out of the house, so Toni freshens up and calls Cheryl to see if they could meet up and talk some more about the case.

"Hi" Toni says.

"Hi Toni! How are you doing?" Cheryl says over the phone.

"I'm doing okay...how are you doing?" Toni responds.

"I'm doing okay as well. Do you wanna come back to my office right now and talk some more about your situation?" Cheryl asks.

"Yea! That's actually what I was calling you for" Toni says, she let the smallest laugh slip at the end. That laugh made Cheryl's heart skip a beat, it took her a while to gather her words.

"Okay great, I'll see you in a few minutes!" Cheryl says, her voice higher pitched than before. 

"Yea, see you soon" Toni says before hanging up.

~at the office~

Cheryl was in a similar outfit from the previous day except now her suit is black instead of red. Her makeup look was natural. Toni's dark brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and she was wearing a pair of black jeans and a navy-blue t-shirt with some black sneakers.

"Hi Toni! Have a seat please!" Cheryl says with a smile on her face when she sees Toni enter the room.

 The sight of each other made them both nervous. Toni sends a small smile back and walks towards the two chairs that are placed in front of Cheryl's desk and sits down in one of them. 

"I need you to update me daily and try to get as much proof as possible" Cheryl says while looking at Toni.

"I can try..." Toni responds.

"Good, has anything happened today?" Cheryl asks with a caring tone in her voice.

"Well, he didn't hurt me in any type of way, but..." Toni says and stops before continuing.

"But what?" Cheryl asks with a slightly raised eyebrow. 

"But he didn't let me eat anything." Toni says with a small frown resting on her lips.

"Are you hungry? If you are I could get you something from the vending machine or ask someone to bring you-" Cheryl rambles the words out but gets stopped by Toni.

"No thank you, I'm okay" Toni responds with a small and reassuring grin on her face.

"Are you sure?" Cheryl asks wanting to make sure she's actually okay.

"Yea, I'm sure!" Toni says

"Okay...how often does this happen?" Cheryl asks while grabbing a pen and blank sticky note off of her desk.

"Only when I upset him a little or when his breakfast isn't ready quick enough" Toni replies as Cheryl writes the information down. 

"And how often is that?" Cheryl asks while biting the inside of her cheek a little bit, she does that when she's concentrated or anxious or concerned.

"Well, I normally have his breakfast ready on time so that's rare, but I do accidently upset him often, so maybe once a week" Toni responds and looks down at her hands and starts fidgeting with them.

"I'm so sorry Toni, no one deserves to go through that." Cheryl says as Toni looks up at her

"It's fine, I didn't need to gain any more weight anyway" Toni says. 

Hearing those words broke Cheryl's heart. The fact that Toni thought she deserved that horrible treatment made Cheryl's heart ache. Cheryl thought she was perfect just the way she was. Cheryl couldn't think of anything to say so it was silent for a while.

"Toni, for this to be a fair case you're going to have to tell him that you want to go to court and get a divorce soon" Cheryl informs her hesitantly. 

"I can't." Toni says

"You have to, if you don't then I can't help you." Cheryl says

"I can't tell him something like that." Toni says with tears filling her eyes but not falling. It wasn't Cheryl's first time hearing those words. 

"Toni listen to me, you can. I know you can." Cheryl says while placing her hand onto Toni's hand which was resting on the desk. 

Toni looked at the pair of hands. Her hand. Cheryl's hand was so soft. Toni didn't know if it was because she wasn't used to other people touching her or what, but she could've sworn she felt a spark when their hands touched. Cheryl felt the same spark but neither of them said anything.

"I know you're scared but you can't let that fear take over you" Cheryl says. She was also scared, terrified actually. She really wished Toni didn't have to tell her husband but that was how this worked.

"Okay...I'll try. I have to go before he gets home but thank you for talking with me today" Toni says and removes her hand from under Cheryl's while standing up. She immediately misses the touch. 

"Of course, that's my job! Be careful Toni..." Cheryl says trying to hold back the tears that were starting to build in her eyes.

"I will, goodbye Cheryl" Toni says

"Goodbye Toni" Cheryl responds with a small wave as Toni walked out the door.
