"Would you tell me why you are here and not with your grandmother who will most certainly have my head if you are even near war things", Andrija couldn't help but ask as he looked at his own son who in return was just playing with the piece of a dragon. One that was cast away as soon as he came to rule.
"Relax, she sent me here to you until I learn my lesson", Aleksandar said in his deep tone as if he wasn't even there as he just tossed the figurine in his hand. His sky blue eyes were fixated on the map he was designing.
"And what in God's name did you do to get her to kick you out momentarily? Does it have to do with the scar on your neck", Andrija wasn't stupid not to notice a scar that was healing on his neck as if a knife sliced through him. Aleksandar finally stopped throwing the figurine as he looked at the whole map leaning his hands to rest his head on them as if to hide the scar. His whole smirk made Andrija look suspiciously behind his mask. Aleksandar answered finally after a minute of silence, "I told you I ran and cut myself on the neck. Don't treat it like it's a big deal".
Not a big deal? Is he hearing his own son right? He could see it was not just a accident as the scar was too deep and was pretty serious... He let it slide, as Aleksandar would just lie without even an ounce of sympathy. Even as a child he knew Aleksandar had a rough time, he would always see his son either cry or play alone near a river as no one goes there. Perhaps it hurt him as a father to say this but Aleksandar never truly had a father nor a mother. Ripped away from his mother since he was born and ripped away from a father when he was supposed to learn and evolve into a man. Now he just has a shell of his own child.
"You want to hear a story?", Andrija silently asked praying Aleksandar would let him at least talk.
"Again about a hero?", he just looked at Aleksandar who just dropped his eyes staring at the table. He could hear pain in Aleksandar's voice and the pain in his eyes. Perhaps... Aleksandar still was that little boy just waiting for someone to come and save him.
"It's about a father and his little baby boy who lived in a small home"
He was silent as he awaited Aleksandar's outburst but nothing came from the young man as he was still in the same position, same look in the eyes.
"The father was very mean and he... he was selfish but the child was his life. Perhaps anyone could say the child was everything to him. The child was all the father knew he could never be, happy, joyous and... selfless. They both lived in a small house in the middle of the forest where they could be safe. The father would always watch his child play with such great joy. He loved his laugh and his happy smiles whenever he looked at him. The thing the father loved the most was the hugs he would receive from his own child. He might have been the only parent in the child's life but he tried to be the best. He thought he was. Even though he held a big secret, a secret he could not bear to say. He knew it could ruin everything for him. The secret that he hid from. Yes, the father hid in the woods from this secret. Everyone had a secret but his could ruin everything, his life would be over. Call him selfish but he wanted it all to last forever, anyone would want that. He told his child his mother was never coming home and yet she was alive and well, trying to find him. The father knew the day would come when he would face reality, as his son would be taken from him, his only joy... He had to do something, he would always say to himself. He needed to make them last forever. She could not have him. The father wanted to protect him from the world. He put the child on his knee and told him he was strong. He was his joy. He loved him. Everything was so unreal for the father as he tried to do it. He just wanted to protect his son, he would always say as he put a bottle on his son's mouth"
"You don't need to finish it", Aleksandar stopped him as Andrija felt himself relax, but soon he tensed. He probably found out...
"The father kills the child and then himself cause of his selfishness...", Aleksandar said and Andrija felt relief wash over him, "The child is very lucky to be loved and protected by the father. I do not blame the father for his fear for I would do the same thing"
"I would do the same for you", Andrija said as he watched Aleksandar look at him questioningly. Andrija slowly walked to Aleksandar kneeling beside him. Embracing him while looking in his eyes. "No matter how old you are. No matter how many times you try to push me away. No matter what you did. A father's love would never die. You are the only child I felt connected to, the only one I could ever love. I am a bad person but for you i'd be a stone and a shoulder. I would burn anyone who would even try to harm you. The only thing I regret was never coming to your room thirteen years ago", Andrija finally said it and he waited for Aleksandar to say something but the boy didn't. He only stayed silent.
As Andrija slowly got up and started to leave he stopped with Aleksandar's chair making a noise. He turned around but Aleksandar didn't move but his eyes did. He was shocked to see tear filled eyes as he looked at him without moving or blinking. Aleksandar was rigid as he spoke up, "I wouldn't change a thing. We both know we cannot turn back time, so why speak of if. I don't blame anyone, I am just disappointed you forgave the worst people, letting innocent people suffer. I lost my child five years ago and God gave you one hundred. Why is it so unfair? I only wanted to feel my son and I never could. I never could protect him. I know how you felt when I was missing. I know what it means to lose a child you wished you could of protected".
Andrija felt his heart swell as Aleksandar spoke those words. Son? His son had a son? He was a grandfather? Was...
"What happened to him?"
"I don't know and I do not want to remember"
"How was he like"
"I do not know, I just... don't know"
Andrija could only look at Aleksandar as he himself seated beside his son who still stared blankly at nothing. Lightly touching his sons back as he let all the information slide.
"You will have more children", Andrija said trying to light up Aleksandar's mood.
"I cannot have any more children. I made sure of it", Aleksandar spoke with determination and Andrija did not want to ask. He didn't want to know what Aleksandar did fearing the answer.
The only thing he could do was embrace him as Aleksandar still did not move nor avert his eyes.
