Part 3: First Trial

(Varian and Yong walking to the center as the lighting becomes red)

Yong: So this is what it looks like inside.

Varian: Yep. I'm so glad your family let you come along as my guide. How many of you were there?

Yong: Six kids, Mom, Dad and Granny (counts on his fingers).

Varian: That's a lot. Just me and my dad. And my sister and brother... well they aren't my actual siblings. More like an honorary thing.

Yong: That's cool! What are they like?

Varian: Well... Oh! Is that aluminum? (Varian picks up rock prompt and puts it in his bag)

Yong: (picks up staff without the gem) Hey, what's this?

Varian: (looks at it, then the book) Huh... My Mom has a drawing of it. Looks like it's called the Staff of Light. From the sketch, it looks like it's missing the blue crystal. See?

Yong: Cool... What does that mean?

Varian: "Use the light to see the truth"... It must be a riddle. Maybe we're supposed to use the staff to lift the crystal into the light to reveal something...

Yong: With what light?

Varian: Yeah, good point...

(Mist starts coming on the stage. Yong's parents and Yong's older sister come on stage)

Yong's Mom: Yong, we are very disappointed.

Yong: (Turns towards them) What are you-? Mom! How could you say that? No, you would never think that!

Yong's Dad: We don't want you to come home.

Yong's older sister: Yeah. All you've ever done is blow up my stuff! You'll never amount to anything!

Yong: This is not happening...

Yong's Mom: But it is.

Yong: (Turns to Varian) Varian-

(Varian sinks to the floor sobbing)

Yong: Varian!

Varian: No... No, I'm trying! I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to hurt anyone... I was so lost... you promised you forgave me... If you hadn't left me alone... You're right... I'm so sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...

Yong: Varian! Snap out of it! Who is he talking to? Unless? (Turns to his parents and sister) You're just illusions! Figments of my darkest imagination! Varian, it isn't real. Whatever you're seeing isn't true.

(Varian only repeats "I'm sorry" over and over)

Yong: True! (Snaps his fingers) I got it! Don't worry, Varian! I'll save you! (Starts looking for the crystal). It should be around here... Ah-ha! (Picks it up) Found it! (He runs to the staff and puts the crystal in place and holds it up). "Use the light to see the truth". It must mean to use the staff to chase away the illusions!

(Staff lights up and Yong's family leaves and Varian passes out)

Yong: Varian! Oh, no! That wasn't supposed to happen-

Varian: (groans) What happened?

Yong: Oh, thank goodness! You're ok. I think I just defeated the trial! We were seeing these illusions. I think it was supposed to be our greatest fear. Yours seemed to be terrible.
