Beth Greene POV
The man led us down the long, broken road, blood sprawled across it. Cars spread along the way, turned or flipped.
"Almost there!" He said, happily.
I hung on to Daryl. His strong arms had carried me for miles.
Large, rusty gates started to appear in the distance, roofs peeked up from behind them.
The man walked up to the gate.
"Hey boss, it's me!"
The gates opened, squeaking, revealing a women. She had blonde hair and looked about 40.
"Hello, are these your new recruits?" She said looking at us. She welcomed us into their village, closing the gate behind us.
"Welcome to our community!"
A quick glance revealed a town of many houses. Dead grass sprawled across the lawns. Multicolored homes were covered with cracks.
"Hello everyone! Your houses will be at the end of the street. There is a town meeting in a little and I would love for you to attend! It will be a great way to meet the people in the community!" She said before directing us to two large buildings, one a pale yellow, the other a soft blue.
"See you guys soon!" She said with a smile, walking down the long paved road.
Daryl set me down and I limped over to the yellow house, I always liked the color yellow, it reminded me of sunshine. I opened the door to reveal beautiful wooden floors. A stair case was to the right, and a living room to the left.
"Wow." I heard Daryl say behind me. "They sure put a lot of effort into keeping this place clean."
He was right, the bookshelfs were dusted and the room smelled fresh.
Daryl scooped me up, whispering in my ear.
"Let's see what's up here!"
He ran upstairs. There were seven doors, all of which were closed.
Daryl set me down and I opened the first one. I slowly opened it, exposing a large, spotless bathroom. It was gorgeous, a grand white bathtub glimmered underneath a frosted window.
Suddenly I realized how dirty my skin was. Blood soaked my jacket, my hair was knotted and plastered with dirt.
"Daryl, I'm gonna take a bath!" I yelled from the room, down the hallway.
I closed the door, peeling back my dirty clothes, laying them in a pile next to me. I pulled out a drawer to which held a hair brush, shampoo, and body wash.
Delighted, I grasped the hairbrush, combing through my long blonde locks. I reached over and started the tub. The warm water oozed from the faucet, splashing down on the floor of the tub.
When it reached its maximum height, I stopped the liquid and later down into the tub. I squeezed out soap, lathering it onto my skin. The dirt came off into the tub, turning it a pale brown. I wasn't just cleaning my skin, I was cleaning my soul. I felt like I was washing away all the bad memories, all the people we lost.
My thoughts were clouded by a knock.
"Um, who's there? I'm in the tub!" I shouted.
"Uh it's me, you've been in there for 30 minutes.."
I giggled, had it really been that long?
I let the water flow out of the tub, all the memories with it.
My body was no longer a dirty mess, but a gorgeous figure. I wrapped a towel around myself and stepped out into the house, walking to the nearest bedroom. An open closet stood to the left. I walked over, 3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, a jacket and sweat shirt were inside. I unhooked some jeans and the sweatshirt. Pulling them onto my body swiftly.
I looked up, a mirror rested atop a large dresser. I looked at myself, and saw change. I wasn't an innocent, sweet farm girl any more, my eyes had lost the adventure they once seemed to hold, my face not the bright color that reflected the sun, my face had changed. It's good it doesn't look the same, I thought to myself. Then I remembered my hair. The long blonde wavy hair that my sister used to braid, my dad making fun of her technique. I laughed at the memory, it was a happy one. Long hair reminded me of long summer days on the farm, not the flesh eating creatures it now faces.
Suddenly the door creeped open, revealing Daryl.
"Where is everyone?! I feel like we're the only people here!" I said.
"That's cause we are, the others left for the town meeting." He said looking into my eyes.
"Oh ok.."
My fingers traced the outline of a dresser handle, opening it slowly. Inside stood a candle, book, tape and scissors.
Interesting combination.
I grabbed the scissors, bringing them closer to my head.
"I'm gonna cut it." I said, staring at them.
"Let me help."
He walked over, inviting me to sit on the edge of the bed. He reached for them, I released them into his hands.
"How short?" He said, I could tell he was nervous.
"You decide."
I felt weight being lifted off my back, after every cut. My hair fell on the floor, peice by peice.
I strutted up to the mirror, my eyes shocked at what they saw. My hair was shoulder length, an almost perfect cut. It looked stunning.
"Daryl, I love it! I could, I could.."
"Kiss me?"
My eyes glanced at him, a smile forming on my face.
"Yes, kiss you."
