Chapter 28:

“Where are we?” I asked Loki, as we walked cautiously through the forest. “I don’t have a clue, but I think we are able to get out of this damned forest if we keep going this way.” He said, keeping his quick pace. “When you left, what did the battle look like? Did we win? What happened?” I asked. I had almost forgotten about why we were trekking through those woods in the first place. Loki stumbled ever so slightly. “It was terrible. Never seen anything like it in my life, truly. We… we… I can’t remember. I’m sorry. I fear the worst,” he replied in a melancholy tone. I laid my head on his shoulder.

“Why has our life become so horrible and venomous? I don’t know why I got myself into this,” I said, my voice trailing off. We walked through the woods in complete silence ‘til we found a road. We were on top of a hill that looked over the city. The air above the city was littered with smoke, and flames were visible. I didn’t know what to expect. I hoped for the best, though I knew it was unlikely. We began walking down the road towards the city. On the way, we ran into many people who were feeling the city.

“Who’s winning down there?” Loki said to a woman who had tears in her eyes. A look of complete horror was strung across her face. She just stared at us, didn’t so much as blink let alone speak. She dashed away before we could get any information out of her. Loki clutched me close to him. “I’m not letting anyone take you from me again,” he said in a hushed tone. Fear does that to you. It changes you. You think differently, you act differently, you talk differently. It’s funny, love has the same effect. Who knew that two of the strongest things in the universe are so similar, but so very different.

30 minutes later, we mad our way into the city. There was an equal amount of bodies as there was rubble, which frightened me. There was no telling who won. We searched frantically through the dead for Cap, Tony, Natasha, Barton, Banner, and Thor. We did not find them, but that did not calm our nerves. Death can be a relief as much as it is a tragedy. The city was quiet as death, if not more so. We called out for our friends, hoping we could find them before something found us.

“Loki! Madelyn!” I heard a familiar voice call out to us. I turned around to see Thor, a relieved look on his face. He rushed up and tackled the both of us. “Get off me you blond buffoon!” Loki said in a muffled voice. Loki pulled away and brushed himself off. “I am sorry, brother. I am just happy to see you both unharmed,” Thor said, slightly embarrassed. “Don’t worry about Loki. He’s happy to see you too, he just refuses to show it,” I said, nudging Loki. “We’re so happy to see you,” I said. Thor talked to us about the battle, and I explained what had happened to me. “Our numbers were dwindling, along with our hope. Suddenly, though I don’t know why, we started to make our mark on the enemy. Soon they were the ones with sinking numbers. We had made our comeback. They retreated into the city, but we kept pushing. We slaughtered each and every one of them, until only Nocturne was left. We killed him, then and there. At long last we had won!” Thor said. Though he was happy, his voice was hushed. “Did you hear that? We won! We did it, it’s over!” I exclaimed to Loki. He grinned at me and suddenly lifted me into the air. He spun me around while we both laughed. “Of course I heard, dear! I’m not deaf,” he laughed and set me down and set his lips on mine. I intertwined my hands around his neck while he put his on my waist. He pulled his soft lips away from mine and he held me. We held each other, never to let anyone part us. “Now I think that we should have ourselves a wedding, do you not?” he whispered, his lips brushing against my ear. I looked him straight in the eyes. “I would like nothing more,” I said softly. I pulled away and put my hand to my forehead. “How can we be so selfish, talking about weddings before we even know the fate of our friends! Thor, how are the others? Are they all ok?” I said. Thor smiled at my concern. “Yes, they are all fine. They’re all at a little place a few blocks from here. You have nothing to worry about. Me on the other hand, I have my my baby brother to worry about,” he said, punching Loki playfully on the arm. “We’re going to be married, Loki…” I said as he took my scratched and bloody hands in his. “and I wouldn’t want to be married to anyone else,” I said. “I love you to the stars, until the end of time, forever and ever,” he said softly. Perfect is the only word I can use to describe that moment.
