My phone rang as soon as I stepped out of the shower stall. I hurriedly wrapped a towel around myself and ran to answer it without checking the caller I.D.
"Hello?"
"I'm surprised you answered," came a deep, familiar voice.
"Hey, Aden. I almost missed the call actually, I was just stepping out of the shower. Can you hold on a minute, I need to put some clothes on."
Silence.
I took the phone off my ear, checking to make sure that the call was still connected.
"Hello, Aden you there?" I questioned as I finished slipping on my Batman crop top and shorts sleep set with a cover up since it was a little chilly. I used to like wearing cute clothes to bed and I figured that since I wanted to find my old self again, I'd have to opt for something other than oversized sweatshirts and pants. Not that I'd ever have anything against that type of clothing, I just wanted to put aside my tomboy ways sometimes. Nothing wrong with that.
"Yeah, I'm here, sorry about that." His voice sounded raspier and his accent came out even more. "I just got distracted for a bit. How was the rest of your afternoon?"
"It was great, thank you. Incident free. We only had a few items left so we gave those out as samples and I shared the last bits between Becky, my grandmother and myself. The feedback was amazing and the number of followers and friend requests that we've been gaining is unbelievable."
"Good. I'm glad to hear that. That was a really smart way to market. Your booth was one of the most talked about."
"Thank you. I've been preparing for months so I'm really happy to hear that," I said, not knowing what else to say. In person my confidence would spike, phone calls on the other hand were a completely different story.
There was always that awkward silence after the regular greeting and I would always hurry to end the call, claiming to have something important to do.
It was always worse when the person on the other end was just as weird and quiet as my awkward ass. Luckily Aden spoke up before the silence got too unbearable.
"Are you going to be there tomorrow?" He asked.
"No, I'm not. Today was only a pop up shop type of thing and we had a big enough turnout today. The goal was to promote my brand and we did just that so I gave my spot up to this lady who runs a small Filipino restaurant with her kids."
"Hm. That was very noble of you. What are your plans for tomorrow then?"
"I'm going to sleep til ten for starters, I'm tired as hell. There's a concert happening at the fair tomorrow, I was thinking maybe I'd pass but I don't have company yet."
"I can go with you. If you'd like."
Huh?
"What?" I said stupidly.
"I said, I can go with you. I don't have anything to do tomorrow."
"Oh, um," I hesitated and pulled my bottom lip between my teeth, "I don't know.."
I hadn't been out with a guy in almost a year. I'd busied myself with work and classes. Did I even remember how male and female interaction worked?
"I won't pressure you, it was just a suggestion. I did promise that we'd continue with formalities later. It would be nice to catch up," he said coolly. He sounded so calm whereas I could hear my fucking pulse right in my ear.
"You did. You know what, sure, I'd like that."
I could practically hear the surprise in his voice as he spoke. "Uh yeah, okay. Text me your address when we get off the call."
